07/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Marbles was brought into the shelter as a stray. He was kept in the client’s home for two weeks, and has minimal behavior history in a home. The client stated Marbles would growl and snap if his food bowl was bothered while he was eating. This behavior indicates that Marbles gives appropriate warnings over the food bowl, and he has not escalated to biting, but we advise that Marbles be left alone while eating in order to prevent this escalation in the future. Nothing should ever be taken directly from Marble’s mouth, and his adopters should teach him “drop” and other trade up games. Reward-based management and modification guidelines for food bowl guarding can be found at ASPCApro.org. Upon intake Marbles was described as calm and tolerant of all handling. During SAFER Marbles came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, he was social towards the assessor. Marbles had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor; he allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Marbles was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Marbles was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Marbles appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns during his safer. The behavior department feels Marbles can be suitable for an “experienced” adopter with (no small children) in the house hold. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is down with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-Dog: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Marbles greets appropriately and wanders in the pen in a group of male and female dogs.
