**NOT AT SHELTER – TEMPORARILY IN ACC FOSTER** FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: [email protected]** A volunteer writes: Kendrick is a quirky, funny boy unlike any I’ve met before. His favorite activities include: jumping up to try to steal treats out of your hand (because why sit for them when you’ve got legs this long?!); jumping over puddles (anything to avoid getting his feed wet); and chasing after the ball for about one millisecond before deciding it doesn’t look that fun after all. Kendrick loves to choose his own direction on walks, stopping often on a whim to change direction, although he’s getting better at walking on the leash. A nervous Nellie at first, Kendrick prefers not to be touched without warning (he wants to get to know you first!). He seems to be housetrained, is very food-motivated (making him a great candidate for teaching tricks with treats!), and has a greyed snout that makes me think he’s got a whole lot of wisdom to share. Come and meet Kendrick at the Brooklyn ACC today!

Hello, my name is Kendrick. My animal id is #21226. I am a male tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 20-Feb-2018.
Kendrick is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infection Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

[Spay/Neuter Waiver – Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary:: Kendrick came into the assessment room nervous with his tail tucked, he was fearful and trembling around the handlers.
Summary (1):: Kendrick was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. Here at the Care enters, Kendrick has shown interest in socializing but is a bit timid approaching the other dogs. He investigates the pens with a low body, and is wary of the handlers. He has built some confidence and engages in brief rear sniffs, but he mostly keeps to himself. He is respectful, and moves away when another dog offers him a correction. The Behavior Department recommends that Kendrick be placed in a home with resident dogs that are respectful and matches his calm demeanor. 2/21: When off leash at the Care Centers, Kendrick is extremely nervous. He displays a low body and pauses while exchanging greets then avoids both handlers and the novel dog, the rest of his session. 2/22-26: In a group of calm female dogs, Kendrick continued to be nervous but appropriately greeted the other dogs. He was slightly sexually motivated-chattering, but does not mount. He spends the rest of his session wandering the pens with a low body. He responds to another dogs corrections by walking away. 2/27: Today, when greeting a stiff female dog at the gate, Kendrick became defensive-hard barking and growling. 2/28: Kendrick occasionally greeted the other dogs, while exploring the pens.
Date of intake:: 2/20/2018
Summary:: Head whip and snapped, mouth the leash. no handling was done.
Date of initial:: 2/20/2018
Summary:: Scared,whale eyes and trembling.
ENERGY LEVEL:: Kendrick displays a low activity level in the care center.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Kendrick is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Kendrick has shown high levels of fear in the care center in each interaction, though he manages his stress well and has not escalated to warning signs. He needs a very slow approach and the ability to warm up to new people and new environments at his own pace. Kendrick should be permitted to initiate interactions and solicit attention when he feels comfortable, rather than being forced to interact
