07/04/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: We do not know much about Bear..Is it even his real name ? Did he mingle with children, other dogs or even cats ? Did he treasure his possessions ? Was he friendly to strangers ? All what we got is that his owner died, making Bear ours, hopefully temporarily until we find him a new family. Bear, although endowed with a gorgeous and thick Shepie coat, has not been too pampered lately…His nails are so long, his muzzle and toes are affected by some kind of dermatitis. His weight is good though and I bet that he was loved because Bear, although a bit wary and sad, is underneath, a very sociable and loving dog. I remember him on his first day at the care center, all scared and huddled at the back of his kennel. I took “cage pictures” of him and he looked at me with very “blue” eyes. I felt for him, so strongly… He had a home and a master and now, all alone , in a big city shelter… It is so tough for an elderly pooch…Few days down the line, I found my friend Bear with a little cold.. Old chaps are so vulnerable. He came slowly to his door and got leashed very easily. We did a number of “laps” in the yard. No marking but Bear did his business right away. He posed for photos and sat for roast beef that he took so delicately from my hand. A fellow volunteer told me that he played ball quite nicely but he did not replicate a ball game for me. Instead, Bear showed me his very tender side. He came to sit in front of me and laid his head sideways into my lap for petting. What an affectionate elder ! I really love Bear, his looks, his sensitive soul, his mind that is still sharp and the wonderful feelings that are still to emerge fully. Handsome Bear is at the Manhattan Care Center, hoping for you to discover him, fall in love and offer him your home and mostly your heart.
07/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bear will not receive a SAFER aggression assessment at this time due to his medical condition and out of concern for his stress level. He has been examined repeatedly by the medical team and has been social and tolerant of most handling. He has been uncomfortable, at times, with having his ears touched and his feet touched. There may be medical reasons for this response. A person familiar with Bear describes him as friendly, mellow, and affectionate. He slept on his owner’s bed and is house trained. He may growl when his food or water bowl or his toy is taken away. Since we cannot fully assess his behavior at this time, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can address his medical condition and then re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment.
