A Little Bit About Me…

A volunteer writes: Her beauty could leave you speechless ! She is so perfectly made, shiny jet black, healthy with a dotted bib , dancing ears and big horsy face…Yes, Zoey is a very attractive gal with a bubbly personality to match ! Her name suits her well as she is very lively, enthusiastic and loves to jump and play. She is so quiet and collected in her kennel, though. Her begging eyes helped by her lovely smile do all the talking. “I so want to be out, walk, run, play and be with you.” Although quite energetic, Zoey is a very good walker, likely house trained and respectful of birds and other dogs. She sits upon request, comes when called and even hops on the bench, giving little kisses on my neck. Zoey is with us as her family is moving to a place not allowing pets. She lived with a small child and comes with good recommendations from her former owners. Zoey is a strong , happy, playful, sociable and very friendly dog who would do well with an energetic and active new owner or family. She is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

Basic Information: Zoey is a female, 2 year old, large breed dog. Client got her from a friend when she was 2 months old and has had her since. Unfortunately, client had to surrender due to Zoey being too active and not being allowed to have pets in her home. She has no known health issues and was last at the vet earlier last year.

Previously lived with: 2 adults

How is this dog around strangers? Zoey is friendly and outgoing with strangers. She plays exuberantly with adults.

How is this dog around children? Zoey is relaxed and playful with children. She plays exuberantly with children.

How is this dog around other dogs? Zoey is relaxed and playful with all dogs. She plays exuberantly with them at an off leash dog park.

How is this dog around cats? Zoey has never been around cats. Behavior is unknown.

Resource guarding: Zoey does not resource guard her toys, treats, or food.

Bite history: Zoey has no bite history

Housetrained: Yes

Energy level/descriptors: high

Other Notes: Zoey will bark and howl at fire trucks and construction noises. She will knock her food out of the bowl and eat it off the floor. She isnt bothered when pushed off the furniture, held or restrained, disturbed while sleeping, brushed, and having paws touched. She loves baths and will bark when someone unfamiliar knocks on the door. She is friendly when someone unfamiliar walks up to owner outside.

Has this dog ever had any medical issues? No

Medical Notes : Zoey has no known health issues upon intake.

For a New Family to Know : Zoey is described as a friendly, affectionate, and playful. She loves to watch tv and will follow you around when you are home. She plays with any squeaky and rope toys and is indoors only. She sleeps in her crate and eats pedigree dry food. She loves anything as a treat. She is house trained and rarely has accidents in the home. She prefers the cement when outside. She is well behaved when left alone in the home and knows the command sit and go get your toy. She goes to the dog park for exercise and pulls very hard on leash.

Behavior Notes: Upon intake, Zoey had a wiggly body and waggy tail. She jumped up on client for pets and took treats out of counselors hand gently. She allowed counselor to collar while distracted with a treat. She sat perfectly for her picture.

Date of assessment: 31-May-2018

Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.

Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Dog does not place his/her body between you and the toy.

Summary: Zoey approached the assessor with a soft body and jumped up in a playful manner. She jumped up a lot throughout the assessment and was a bit mouthy but remained social throughout and allowed all handling.

PLAY GROUP :

5/31: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Zoey is tense upon approach.

6/1: Zoey approaches the male helper dog with slightly tense body. When he attempts to solicit running play, she becomes increasingly tense, following him with hackles raised.

6/2-6/5: Zoey remains tense around other dogs.

Date of intake: 30-May-2018

Summary: Zoey had a wiggly body and solicited attention.

ENERGY LEVEL: Zoey is described as having a high level of activity. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Recommendations: No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments: No young children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption.

Potential challenges: Basic manners/poor impulse control, Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition

Basic manners/poor impulse control: Zoey has a high level of activity and jumps up a lot on people in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.

Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Zoey has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Zoey’s teeth make contact with skin).
