Summary: Zeus was a bit anxious (Whining, mouthy) and a bit uncomfortable with restraint during the handling assessment. He would attempt to exit; though he allowed all handling.
PLAYGROUP:
Zeus was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. When off leash at the Care Center, Zeus is persistent with his sexually motivated behavior, and is difficult to interrupt.
8/18: Since Zeus returned to the Care Center, he continues to be persistently sexually motivated, and ignores handler interruptions.
INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/17/17
Upon intake Zeus had a high energy level and pulled hard while on leash. He was receptive to handling, counselor was able to scan (positive) and collar. Zeus had a tense body but allowed all handling.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/17/17
Zeus was very active, displayed high energy, whips around quickly during parts of exam, tucks hind end to avoid touch.
ENERGY LEVEL:
The previous owner describes a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. Zeus is a young, social dog. Zeus will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home
_X_No children (under 13)- Zeus appears to easily aroused and become uncomfortable with up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time.
_X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition- While he applies only light pressure, Zeus was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Zeus puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways.
_X_Anxiety-Zeus has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Zeus, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
