09/25/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/25/17 19:11 Basic information: Zeus is a 6 year’s old neutered large dog. He was surrendered to MACC due to a pet conflict in his last home. He has no known health problems or injuries. Socialization: He was friendly around strangers. He played exuberantly with adults. He lived with a 4 years old spayed female large dog who he did not play with. He was usually tolerant of her but got jealous when she got near his owner. Behavior: He was not bothered by storms/fireworks. He snapped when his food bowl was touched while he was eating. It is unknown how he would react if his toys and treats were to be taken away as the previous owner gave them to him and never attempted to take them back. He was not bothered when held or restrained. He was not bothered by baths, nail trims or when unfamiliars approached the previous owner or his home. For a new family to know: The previous owner described him as a friendly, independent, and anxious. His activity level was very high. The previous owner stated that he was a great listener. His favorite activity was going on long walks. He follow the previous owner around the house. His favorite toys were kongs and his favorite games was tug. He was kept mostly indoors. He slept inside his big crate. His favorites treats were salami, beef and ham. He was very house trained and rarely had accidents inside the house. He went potty on the grass/cement. He knew military commands as well as sit, stay, stand down, and eyes front. He pulled lightly on the leash. During intake: Zeus had a relaxed body posture. He stood in between his previous owner’s legs. He stared at the admissions counselor then look away as soon as the admissions counselor glimpsed at him. He backed away and lay under the chair of his previous owner. He was licking his lips and staring at his previous owner. He allowed the admissions counselor to collar him with the previous owner’s help. He walked calmly on the leash and walked inside his kennel without any problems.

09/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 9/25/17 Neutered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults and a dog Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Tolerant of the dog he lived with, but not good when she approached his owner Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Yes, Zeus snaps when his food bowl is touched Bite history: Yes, Zeus bit the dog he lived with during a fight, leaving multiple bites. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Zeus is described as a friendly, independent, and anxious with a very high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/27/17 Summary: Zeus is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging, barking, and growling. He has allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. When he was removed from his kennel, he bared teeth at handlers, causing safety concerns. Out of concern for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Zeus is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Zeus hid behind his owner and backed away from the counselor. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/26/17 During his initial medical exam, Zeus was tense and shaking. ENERGY LEVEL: Zeus’ previous owner described him as having a very high activity level. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Upon approach in his kennel, Zeus was growling at the handler. Upon leashing, he backed away, and then when attempting to leash a second & third time, Zeus low-growled but allowed the handler to leash him. He walked out of his kennel on his own, and though he vocalized he was uncomfortable (low-growling), he allowed the handler to collar him for playgroup.
Zeus showed distance-increasing defensive behaviors towards dogs and humans, and was therefore removed from the yard. When attempting to remove Zeus from the pen, he tensed up and bared teeth at handlers. With lingering interaction through the pen, Zeus growled and snapped at the handlers. When the handler picked Zeus’ leash up, he settled down and did not show any further defensive behaviors. Upon leashing, Zeus cowered away, but was easily leashed when given time to acclimate. He was returned to his kennel without issue. Out of concern for his stress levels and safety, handler did not “clip” Zeus’ lead and used a pole to remove it from inside his kennel. Zeus did not react to this. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to potential resource guarding and behavior observed at the care center of showing teeth at handlers, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Single-pet home: Due to Zeus’ history of fighting with and biting the other dog in the home, we recommend he be placed as a single pet. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) to address these issues. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Zeus’ previous owner reported that he will snap if his food bowl is touched. We recommend that Zeus be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Zeus’ mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Zeus has snapped at people during his stay in our care centers when uncomfortable; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment.
