08/09/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Zeus is one of those dogs that is just excited and happy about everything. With a few wags of his tail, he can help you learn to appreciate that life is good! In a way that only a master at making lemonade out of lemons could, he even rolled over for belly rubs during his initial medical exam! He has previously lived with an 8 month old baby and a Pomeranian, and we’re told he was relaxed, playful and tolerant with both. He’s SUPER friendly and loves meeting people; whenever I have him in the yard he does his best to get the attention of anyone passing by in hopes of making a new friend! He pulls on leash and jumps up to solicit affection, but I wouldn’t at all call him unruly, just energetic. He seems housebroken, knows some commands, and is reported to be well-behaved in the home. He is fun, adorable, affectionate and his company is definitely something to be excited about…he would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!

SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/8/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest. Summary: Zeus was anxious during the handling assessment; whining, continuously pulling toward the door, and displaying a high energy. Zeus was a bit distracted though he allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Zeus displays sexually motivated body language when greeting a novel male and female dog. He briefly engages in cooperative play, but eventually mounts the other dog. He becomes reactive with an intact male and offers him a series of hard correction, before being separated. According to his previous guardian, Zeus has lived with a female Pomeranian. He was relaxed and playful with her. The Behavior Department recommends that Zeus be placed in a home with only tolerant females and neuter males that match his calm sociability. All introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/6/17 At intake Zeus was very energetic, and continuously pulled and jumped on ACS, CCS, and counselor. Limited handling was done due to this behavior. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/7/17 Zeus was very submissive and friendly, actively greets, rolls on back when examined.
ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner describes Zeus as an energetic, confident, dog. He displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment. We recommend a front-clipping harness to manage the pulling, along with rewarding Zeus for walking nicely on leash. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_ No children (under 13)-Due to reported food guarding behavior in the home, as per the owner. Zeus gave appropriate warnings of his discomfort with food being removed while eating by (barking, growling, and snapping) and we feel that children may not know to respect these warnings. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Zeus can be left alone while eating so he does not need to escalate further then the appropriate warnings. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding- Zeus is reported to growl and snap over food. He should be left alone while eating, and should be taught the cue “drop” and other trade up games so, Zeus learns that dropping food or having people around while he is eating is rewarding. Behavior modification protocols for food guarding behavior can be found on aspcapro.org_X_Strength/leash pulling-Zeus is a medium sized strong, dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter which will help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
