07/17/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Zeus, king of the gods! Of course the king of all kings seems to be housetrained, and knows how to “sit” and “give paw.” You have to be smart to be in charge of everything! 🙂 Zeus pulls a bit on the leash but walks very well on a harness, loves to lick his favorite people’s faces, and tries to get into my lap for cuddles regularly. According to his previous owner, Zeus lived in a home with adults and two small dogs, and got along with them just fine– he also does well with other dogs in playgroup here at the ACC. Zeus does seem to be wary of strangers when he’s out on walks (barking at people he doesn’t know), but has never escalated his behavior that we know of. Zeus would do well with an experienced owner who can give him the love, affection, structure, and training that he needs. Please come and meet him today at the Brooklyn ACC!
07/11/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 7/6/17 Unaltered male, owner surrender (length of time in previous home 7 years) Previously lived with: Adults, and been around 2 other dogs. Behavior toward strangers: Glares, low growls though has never escalated further Behavior toward children: Gentle Behavior toward dogs: Friendly Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Partially; Zeus does have accidents a few times a week Energy level/descriptors: Mellow and shy dog with a medium activity level Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/11/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach). He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back Toy: 1. No interest Summary: Zeus was a bit fearful and anxious upon entering the assessment room (panting heavily, shying away and distracted), though warmed up upon a slow approach. Zeus then allowed all handling and leaned in to touch throughout, he displays some social behavior towards the end of the assessment and solicited attention from the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Zeus is soft and social with a group of calm male and female dogs. According to Zeus’ previous guardian, Zeus got along with two small dogs in the home. The Behavior Department recommends that Zeus be placed with dogs that match his calm sociability. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 7/6/17 Zeus was described as a mellow and shy dog. His activity level was medium. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/8/17 Zeus was fearful and tense during his initial medical examination.
ENERGY LEVEL: Zeus is reported to have a medium energy level in the care center in line with what is reported in the home. We recommend daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet to direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: While he remains social with his human care-takers, Zeus has been observed to lunge, at times, at passerby while on leash, baring teeth. We cannot be certain of the depth of his fear though recommend appropriate management when attempting to modify behavior. Force-free, reward based training is recommened. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience adult-only home (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children (under 13): Zeus appears to easily startle and become uncomfortable with sudden movements/handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Zeus has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give Zeus the option to walk away from any social interaction. Zeus should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Zeus’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Zeus may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Fearful: Zeus gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Zeus, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Zeus to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. _X_Anxiety: Zeus has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, panting). This behavior was not reported at intake or in his previous home so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. We recommend an appropriate period of decompression before exposure to new and unfamiliar situations.
