05/14/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/14/17 14:20 Basic Information: Zeus is a 2 year old male Mastiff Mix w/ no past or current medical issues that the previous owner is aware of. Previous owner can no longer have Zeus due to him destroying household items& bite history. Socialization: Around strangers, Zeus is tolerant depending on who’s handling him. Around adults, Zeus plays rough & can get overstimulated & jump on top of people which can result in an injury. Zeus was not allowed to play w/ children due to that. Zeus has lived w/ children ages 12 + 16 & was usually tolerant. Zeus has lived with a neutered 10 year old Shiba Inu & was tolerant & playful but would resource guard food sometimes. Zeus has lived w/ 2 cats & was described as respectful & tolerant. Zeus has bitten a person but, has not bit another animal. Behavior: Zeus destroyed items in the home and outside in the yard. Zeus isn’t bothered when someone touches his food/water. Zeus would growl if someone took away a bone, treat, or toy but, responds to “Drop it” then someone can take it. He was not allowed on furniture. He is friendly if disturbed while sleeping but, usually woke up on his own so behavior when direct contact is made to wake him is unknown. When given a bath or brushing his coat, Zeus is either not bothered or becomes afraid & doesn’t stay still. Zeus growls, barks, and snaps when an unfamiliar person approaches the home or yard & growls with hackles raised if they approach a family member. He would chase bicyclists. During loud noises he isn’t bothered unless it’s from a motorcycle; if so, he would bark & chase it. With unfamiliar dogs, he would show warning signs& snap or lunge @ them. For a New Family to Know: Zeus is described as friendly, playful, excitable, aloof, &anxious w/ a high activity level. When in the home, he is the type to follow you around seeking attention. He likes any toy & fetch. He was kept indoors & outdoors & was fed dry & wet dog food. Zeus is mostly house-trained & would only have accidents if left unattended. He usually goes to the bathroom on cement. When left alone in the home, he would destroy items & have accidents. Zeus knows commands sit, down, “leave it”, and “get” (leave). For exercise, he played in the yard & went jogging w/ owner. On the leash, Zeus doesn’t pull or can pull hard depending on if he sees other animals.

05/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Zeus A1112001 KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 5/14/17 Neutered, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults, children, another dog and 2 cats. Behavior toward strangers: Tolerant Behavior toward children: Tolerant Behavior toward dogs: Tolerant and playful Behavior toward cats: Respectful and tolerant Resource guarding: Yes, he will growl if someone takes his bone or treats away. Bite history: Yes, Zeus has bitten the son three different times as a result of removing a toy directly out of his mouth. Zeus has also bitten his owner when she attempted to clip on his leash though this only resulted in bruising Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: High energy level Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/18/17 Summary: Zeus is difficult to remove from the kennel, he head whips, give direct eye contact and growls. He appears to be uncomfortable in general and remains difficult to handle as he is tense and avoids interaction. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Zeus is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Zeus becomes reactive- barking and muzzle punching- when greeting novel female dogs. Once in the pen, Zeus lunges towards the other dog’s back. Zeus’ previous guardian reported that he lived with and was playful with another dog. Due to Zeus’ low level of sociability towards novel dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that he be the only resident dog at this time. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help decrease Zeus’ arousal when greeting dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/14/17 During his medical examination, Zeus displayed appropriate warning signals
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Single-dog home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Zeus’ low level of sociability towards novel dogs-growling and lunging towards them- the Behavior Department recommends that he be the only resident dog at this time. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help decrease Zeus’ arousal when greeting dogs. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Zeus be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Zeus to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Zeus to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Zeus presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Zeus was observed to growl when engaged with treats and his bone. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Zeus possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Zeus has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times; he would head whips and display direct eye contact. It is important to always go slow and give Zeus the option to walk away from any social interaction. Zeus should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Zeus’ choice to approach a new person or thing. Zeus may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Zeus has a multiple-bite history and escalates to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Zeus needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Peanut as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
05/15/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Zeus becomes reactive- barking and muzzle punching- when greeting novel female dogs. 5/15: When introduced to a novel female through a fence, Zeus barks and lunges at her immediately. Due to this behavior a soft muzzle is required before they are allowed to meet off leash, unfortunately the handler were unable to muzzle him due to clear warning signs he was displaying- head whips and direct eye contact. 5/16: When greeting a female dog, Zeus hard stares and begins to muzzle punch the gate. A muzzle is placed on him as a precaution. Once in the pen, Zeus lunges towards the female’s back. The session was ended.
