05/13/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/13/17 10:52 Basic Information: Zeus is a 2 year old male APBT that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Zeus for 6 months but had to surrender due to pet conflict. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Zeus is friendly and loves to jump on people, give them kisses and snuggle. He has not been around any children or cats in the home so behavior is unknown. Owner has 2 male Yorkshire Terriers in the home and stated that Zeus would bark, growl and air snap at them. Zeus does not have a bite history. Behavior: Zeus is not bothered by thunderstorms or loud noises, having his food, treats or toys taken away, being pushed off furniture, being given a bath, having his paws touched, being held/restrained or when unfamiliar people would approach the home. For a New Family to Know: Zeus is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable. He has a high activity level and likes to play with balls, ropes and bones. In the home, he would like to follow the owner around from room to room and snuggle. He was fed dry food only (brand not given). Owner stated that Zeus is house trained and only have accidents if he had to hold for a long time. When he was left alone in the home for long periods of time, he would destroy household items such as couch cushions. Owner stated that Zeus is crate trained and would go in and out of the crate whenever he wanted (well behaved in the crate). He knows the cues sit, come, down, stay and paw. For exercise, owner would take Zeus on brisk walks on the leash. When on leash, he tends to pull very hard. Owner has never tried to walk him off leash so behavior is unknown. Behavior during intake: Zeus was loose and wiggly during intake. Counselor was able to scan for a mc, collar and take a picture without any issues.

A volunteer writes: Whooooaaaa Zeus not on the first meeting!!! 😉 ..To say Zeus is friendly is an understatement… Zeus brought me back to my teenage years as he repeatedly tried to kiss me on my mouth!! Later I found out he’s like that with everyone he meets!!! 🙁 Zeus loves the volunteers at the Care Center and is a lovable playful guy with us all, Zeus showed us he knows how to sit and loves to fetch toys. If you are interested in adopting “lover boy” Zeus please come to the Care Center and meet him.

SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/16/2017 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/13/2017 During his initial medical exam, Zeus was friendly and allowed all handling, displayed high energy and movement. ENERGY LEVEL: His Finder reports Zeus has a very high activity level which matches what we have seen at the care center. He will require daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend food puzzles and long lasting chews along with daily walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Zeus was reportedly not walked on leash regularly in his previous home. He will need consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend continuing with crate training (the crate must always remain positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards such as treats and praise whenever Zeus eliminates outside, and a consistent feeding schedule. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Destructive behavior: Finder reports when left alone in the home for extended periods of time, Zeus would destroy household items such as cushions. Zeus will benefit by continuing crating when home alone to decrease any chewing of household items as previously reported. He should always be left with durable, long-lasting chews and other engaging toys when he is left alone, to avoid chewing of inappropriate items. Examples are Kongs and Nylabones. It is not recommended that Zeus be crated longer than his regularly scheduled relief walk times, as extended periods may lead to boredom and frustration. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Finder reports Zeus pulls very hard on leash. Zeus is a large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
