MOST RECENT MEDICAL INFORMATION AND WEIGHT
11/28/2016 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 1 – NORMAL , Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 58.4 LBS.
PLAYGROUP: 11/28: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Zeus is playful and offers spins and bows while engaging. He is uncomfortable when greeting a much larger dogs, and actively avoids his approach. Based on behavior observed while in our care, the behavior department recommends slow introductions between Zeus and respectful resident dogs in a home. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Zeus has been observed to display some concern during his stay at our care centers. Zeus has displayed very minimal social behavior though has been tolerant of most handling; He has, for the majority of his stay, remained non attention-seeking and chooses to avoid much interaction between handlers. Zeus has been observed to growl upon certain forms of approach as well as some forms of direct contact. The behavior department does believe Zeus may benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue partner who can further assess/investigate his behavior in a more stable environment before permanent placement into an adoptive home. We cannot with much confidence predict how Zeus may acclimate to a new home environment and believe intervention with a professional trainer/behaviorist would aid in addressing any potential issues he may present with outside of the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (See known history/In-Shelter Observations; Zeus may benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can appropriately manage and assess his behavior in a more stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (See known history/In-Shelter Observations; Zeus has a history of demonstrating defensive behavior and has remained uncomfortable throughout his stay in the care center. Zeus may likely require significant behavioral modification as we cannot be certain if any other behaviors are being suppressed as a result of the shelter environment.)
11/22/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/22/16 21:34 Basic Info: Zeus A1097696 is a 1yr old neutered male blue & white Am Staff mix who was bought as a puppy from someone selling puppies and is being surrendered due to the owner’s health and neighbor complaints. He was last seen by a veterinarian in early 2016 and currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Zeus isn’t too friendly with them he’ll bark, growl and sometimes snap if they come too close (he hasn’t bitten anyone). He’s spent time with children ages 7yrs-10yrs old and was gentle, exuberant, relaxed, playful with them also the adults in the home. He hasn’t lived with other animals but according to the owner he was bitten several months ago by a dog and since then his behavior towards other animals and people has changed. He barks, growls and lunges at other animals (the owner hasn’t allowed for him to get too close in case something were to occur). Although Zeus has snapped at people and other animals in the past he has never bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Zeus isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved, being moved off of furniture, being brushed or being disturbed while sleeping/resting. For bath time Zeus will attempt to jump out of the tub. He hasn’t had his nails trimmed. If someone approaches the home/family member Zeus will bark and or growl (if he doesn’t know them). For A New Family to Know: Zeus is friendly (at times), affectionate (at times), playful, confident, excitable & independent with a medium-high activity level. The owner likes everything about him and Zeus enjoys playing, squeaky toys and games of fetch, chase, wrestling & tug. He’s mostly an indoor only dog who sleeps in his crate & used to be walked 2-3x a day (but not as of the past couple of months) where he pulls on his leash. Zeus eats dry Pedigree 2x a day. He has accidents in the home as he hasn’t been taken outside for a few months but isn’t destructive. Intake Behavior: Zeus didn’t allow handling, he kept barking, growling, at times lunging & howling while his tail was wagging. Due to these behaviors the owner assisted medical and supervisory staff with scanning (-) and collaring. Zeus’s picture was taken in his kennel.
11/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I was hesitant to take Zeus out for a walk but his beauty and nice kennel presentation overpowered my prudence… He came in pretty upset and his former owner told us that he was not always nice to strangers. Zeus accepted gladly my leash and off we went to the yard. He pulls slightly on the leash and does his business on the way. He absolutely loves treats and will sit for them even without me asking. He has the greatest “good boy ” face… He is is absolutely gorgeous, compact, medium size and so well dressed in his silvery flawless coat. Zeus has been so well cared for ! Still, he was relinquished to us as his owner became to ill to care for his dog.It must have been tough on Zeus, an adult, house trained male. Zeus comes with excellent comments: great with his human kids, playful with his masters, free of any handling issues, but more recently(after having been bitten by another dog) unfriendly to strangers and his own peers.I did not experience any untoward behavior from Zeus except that he was a bit pushy to get more treats but accepted without contest my firm and gentle no. He seemed to like to be caressed and was working in sync with me. Of course, dogs and cats might be very different in their home and in a shelter environment . A completely different household might also yield a totally dissimilar behavior in a pet… Right now, I give Zeus the benefit of the doubt and hope that the best part of his personality will develop and prevail, making him wonderful forever best friend. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
