A volunteer writes: Zander is a big goofball in a statuesque body! He’s super friendly and playful and even his teeth are cute. He is easy to handle, seems housebroken, eagerly sits for treats (and has an adorable anticipation face) and seems to want to play with other dogs we’ve seen. Zander is absolutely head over heels in love with TOYS: he lights up at any toy he can get his paws on, sometimes has wishful thinking and tries to use non-toys as toys, and could start selling tickets to let people watch him play with them. He throws them for himself, spontaneously play bows at them, and rolls around on the ground with them as if his tennis ball might give him a belly rub! But you don’t have to be filled with stuffing and a squeaker to earn Zander’s devotion, he’s just as smitten with butt rubs! Come meet this sweet boy at Brooklyn ACC and I promise you’ll leave with a smile!

Summary: Zander was energetic and playful. He was social towards the assessor, and the assistant.
PLAYGROUP:
Zander was brought in to the Care Center as a stray so his previous behavior with other dogs is unknown. When off leash with other dogs in the care center, Zander was initially stiff when greeting a novel female dog. With further playgroup sessions, Zander is able to engage in gentle play when solicited. Zander attempts to mount both male and female dogs. He only briefly listens to handler interruptions before attempting to mount again. Zander is uncomfortable and offers correction when a dog solicits high energy, body contact play. The Behavior Department believes that Zander should be placed in a home with dogs that match his gentle play style and we suggest a dog-dog interaction be conducted to ensure compatible play style and energy.

November: In a group of playful male and female dogs, Zander attempts to mount both male and female dogs. He only briefly listens to handler interruptions before attempting to mount again.
December: Zander is uncomfortable and offers correction when a dog solicits high energy, body contact play. Zander does not engage in play when solicited and offers correction for body contact. In a group of playful male dogs, Zander persistently mounts the male dogs after the handlers interrupt.
January: Zander displays bouncy body language and offers correction when a male dog mounts him. He may mount a female dog but responds well to handler interruptions. Occasionally he is able to solicit and engage in gentle play.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During his initial medical examination, Zander allowed all handling.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience)
_x_ No dog parks. (Zander has shown sociability towards other dogs, however he has begun to persistently mount male and female dogs and offers correction when dogs engage in higher energy play. Due to these behaviors displayed, the Behavior Department recommends that initially Zander not be taken to dog parks to give Zander the chance to decompress from the shelter and reassess his behavior towards other dogs in a more controlled setting.)
Potential challenges:
_X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (Zander has been social with his caretakers but will likely need some guidance to learn how to appropriately interact and play with his new family, in addition to learning appropriate outlets for his considerable energy. We recommend ONLY force-free, positive reinforcement training for dogs.)
