07/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Joining us with two of her roommates (Steelo and Mr. Wacky {a Maltese mix}) when their owner lost their home, Yum Yum is letting us know that being kenneled without her family is not her thing. She’s ready to come out to go potty, go for a walk, and play with her beloved tennis ball. The tennis ball is her prize, she waits for a throw, bats it around the pen, tries to get two in her mouth at the same time, goes up on the bench to chomp on it, and then back down to play some more. We’re told that Yum Yum is social with strangers, has been around children of all ages, plays exuberantly, doesn’t have experience with dogs other than the two she grew up with, isn’t a fan of small dogs, doesn’t guard her stuff, is “very” housetrained, is well behaved when home alone, loves to play chase, and loves being outside. Yum Yum nudges me with her nose to pet her some more if my hand falls idle, sits near me when I take some notes, and when it’s time to go back in I let her take her tennis ball with her. Hopping right back into her kennel with her ball, she settles immediately on her blanket with her prize and wags her tail goodbye until the next time. Yum Yum has great energy for a ‘senior’ and is hoping for a new person or family with an endless supply of tennis balls. We hope that for her, too, and we’ll send you home with a couple of tennis balls to start with. Ask to meet her when you visit.

Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Yum Yum has been anxious and uncomfortable to the point of escalation around other dogs. Yum Yum arrived into our care with other dogs (whom she was only described as ‘tolerant’ with by the formet r owner). However the behavior department feels that Yum Yum should be the only resident dog and should be given time to decompress before being introduced to other unfamiliar dogs. 7/5: When off leah with other dogs, Yum Yum is highly anxious in the pen. She barks at the helper dog when uncomfortable with appraoch. 7/8 update: Yum Yum greets a female appropriately through the gate but then begins to anxiously bark. She is introduced and she relaxes. The helper dog sniffs her a few times and Yum Yum escalates with no provocation; she ceases with handler interruption.
