08/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Yuki is a two year old spayed lab mix who was surrendered to our care centers as her owner no longer has time for her. Yuki has lived with two adults and a newborn baby; is shy around strangers, taking a few minutes to warm up. Once comfortable, she will engage in exuberant play and will jump on people. Yuki has not been around cats and her behavior around other dogs is described as fearful, she will retreat if they begin to bark. Yuki has daily accidents indoors; will bark and growl if a stranger knocks on the door but once inside she will bark but approach and greet them. Yuki is described as having a high activity level. Upon intake, Yuki was tense and growled at the counselor when scanning, her tail tucked and head low. The counselor proceeded slowly, and after several minutes, with the help of treats, Yuki warmed up and allowed all handling. During SAFER Yuki came into the assessment room fearful and timid, she was friendly and social towards the assessor with a slow approach and after several minutes. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Yuki is fearful with her body low during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Yuki was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to Yuki being extremely fearful and not comfortable with fast movements, the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter with no young children. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is between her legs, body a bit tense with her ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: Yuki attempts to engage in gentle play but immediately becomes over whelmed when the other dog reciprocates wiht high energy play. She softly corrects the other dog, and then paces the pen. 8/29/16 update: Yuki has been lunging, growling, hard barking, and baring her teeth at the front of the kennel since she arrived at the Care Center and is not improving with “drive-by treats”. Due to this behavior, we do not feel that Yuki is a suitable candidate for the public adoptions room. Placement should be sought as soon as possible.
08/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
According to Yuki’s previous owner, Yuki has spent time with all size dogs and is described as fearful and if they bark she will retreat. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Yuki is able to engage in gentle play with male dogs but displays assertive posturing with female dogs. The Behavior Department believes that Yuki would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home, however a through dog-dog interaction can be conducted with any potential adopter’s dog to assess Yuki’s comfort level. 8/23: Yuki is nervous, displaying a low body and tense face, but muzzle licks and play bows at the greeter dog. She displays bouncy body language as she attempts to engage in novice play. She is able to engage in gentle, chase play. 8/24: Yuki attempts to engage in gentle play but immediately becomes over whelmed when the other dog reciprocates with high energy play. She softly corrects the other dog, and then paces the pen. 8/25-30: When introduced to a playful female dog, Yuki target the female dog, placing her chin over her, growling, and attempting to mount. She is able to briefly listen to handler interruptions before attempting to mount the female again. 8/31: Yuki engages in high energy play with a playful male. She is slightly nervous, but continues to solicit play.
