05/10/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: York is such a royal-sounding name to me. How perfect then that it’s what we’ve come to call our stunning boy in the crimson coat. Yes, it’s that coat that first captivates me. Cinnamon, orange, and burnt sienna all at once, it is thick and lush and when the sun catches it at just the right angle, York almost seems aglow. Next I’m wow’d by York’s grand stature. At 73 lbs he is not huge by any means but sitting perfectly still in his kennel, his presence demands attention. And attention he gets. As we head out for the park, my taking two steps to every one of his, a staff member stops to marvel, “goodness, he’s gorgeous.” York pulls a bit on leash somewhat due to his size and somewhat due to his determination. He epitomizes the strong, silent type. He is the brooding boy in the corner of the room that you can’t take your eyes off of. The one who leaves you wondering what he’s thinking at all times. It’s no surprise that free in a pen York impresses me once more. He waits patiently for his treats (royalty is accustomed to getting what they want without a fuss) before sidling up and joining me on our bench. I rub that fiery coat and watch as York takes in his surroundings with the air of an heir. The 4 c’s – calm, confident, cool, and collected – all describe our handsome gentleman. Later, as we return to his kennel, York allows me one last head scratch before slowly settling himself down onto his bed. He regards me for a moment, then rests his big head on his front paws and closes his eyes. Somehow I feel like thanking him. Like I’ve just been in the presence of something great. But York has already drifted off and rather than waking him, I slip away, wondering what he’s thinking, and already daydreaming of the next time we’ll meet. York is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
05/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
5/14 SAFER update: York has shown some concerning behaviors with other dogs both off-leash and on-leash while in the care center. When he sees male dogs and small dogs he stiffens, barks then lunges and begins snapping. His most recent interaction off-leash he was aroused when he came into the yard and jumping onto one of the dogs. When correction is offered he stiffens and growls in response. Due to his behaviors with other dogs the behavior department recommends an experienced adopter for York. 5/8 SAFER: York came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter environment. Upon intake it was reported that York came into the shelter calmly, quietly and friendly. York did show some concerning behavior during his medical exam having very nervous body language and resisting handling. He pulled a bit on the leash on his relief walk, but did show some interest in interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. York did not engage in play during the tag interaction and was more interested in exploring his surroundings. He showed no interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest.
