Yami
Hello, my name is Yami. My animal id is #14981. I am a desexed male black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 4 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 30-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Yami is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Upper Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs. In the care center Yami has been very playful and relaxed, he allowed all handling.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: If you ask about Yami, I have no doubt you’ll get a long list of things that he loves. In no particular order, the list goes something like this: eating snow, getting baths and being brushed, lounging around with the small dog he used to live with, running in the park, and playing fetch (though his idea of fetch is running around in the yard with his ball in his mouth). . He’s described as “extremely happy” by his former owners and it’s not an exaggeration! This guy will get you out of a sad funk anytime! Yami is super playful towards small dogs we see along our walk with lots of bouncing and tail wagging. He’s reportedly housetrained and crate trained, and he craves being the center of attention. He loves to show off his tricks-sit, down, give paw, eat a treat and repeat! I know once you get him home with you, you’ll find even more things to add to the list. But first, you have to come to the Brooklyn ACC and ask to meet him today!

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to food guarding behavior. We feel that young children may not know to respect this warning (Growling). Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Yami can be left alone while eating so he does not need to escalate from a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Yami’s previous owner notes that he growls when his food bowl is approached. We recommend that Yani be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Yani’s mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games.
