GONE 06/29/16 **NEW HOPE RESCUE ONLY**
A volunteer writes: Xena, Warrior Princess…. traveling around to fight evil. Our Xena is hardly a warrior, and we’re looking to restore her Princess status in a new home. Surrendered as her family is moving where she isn’t welcome, we’re told she’s friendly and outgoing, lived with young children and was gently playful with them, as well as with a Yorkie and a cat. Princess Xena doesn’t guard her stuff, and her owner loved how sweet and playful she is. She is housetrained to go on a special rug, but also pottied outside the moment we were out the door. Princess Xena is a beauty – her gorgeous chocolate milk color coat is lush and shiny. Her weight is perfect for her size, and it’s clear she’s been well taken care of. Although Xena didn’t like my treats she showed me her ‘sit’, came on my lap for a quick hug and then bounced away to explore our pen. Our lovely lady is looking for a new family to take care of; she’s a proven family dog without her family at the moment. Won’t you come meet her today?

06/26/16 17:04 Basic Info: Xena A1078943 is a 1yr old female chocolate with white Labrador Retriever mix who given to the owner as a gift from a friend at 3months and is being surrendered due to the owner moving out of state where pets aren’t allowed. She was last seen by a veterinarian as a pup and currently and has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Xena is friendly/outgoing. She’s lived with a 6 & 9yr olds and was gentle, exuberant, playful with them also with adults, a cat & a Yorkie. Xena hasn’t bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Xena isn’t bothered by the following: having her food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved, being moved off of furniture, being held/restrained, having her nails trimmed & bath time. If someone unfamiliar approaches the home/family member Xena will bark. She hasn’t been disturbed while sleeping/resting. For A New Family To Know: Xena is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow (at times) & excitable with a medium-high activity level. The owner likes how sweet & playful she is and Xena enjoys playing. When the owner is home she follows them around. Xena enjoys ball, squeaky, stuffed toys & games of fetch/chase. She’s a mostly indoor only dog who’s walked 2-3x a day. When walked Xena pulls on her leash at times. Xena sleeps on a dog bed in her crate (where she is placed while the family is out for about 5hrs) and eats Purina Dog Chow dry food 3x a day. Xena is housebroken & uses a rug that is used for that purpose. Xena’s known commands are “sit” & “lay” & “come”. Intake Behavior: Xena had a super loose wiggly body and allowed all handling. She allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of. It was a little difficult to get a clear picture since she kept trying to jump up on us for attention/affection. Xena was then walked to a kennel with ease where she hopped in.

06/28/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
While social toward her human caretakers, Xena has shown some concerning behavior toward other dogs in the care center. Please see the GroupBehavior entry for additional notes. Due to the severity of the response, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary counterconditioning/desensitization and behaivor modification needed, as well as keep Xena and those around her safe and comfortable. SAFER aggression assessment: Xena pulls a bit on the leash. She was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (light). Xena was overexcited during handling, jumping up, and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Xena was not interested in toys. Xena was surrender to us. Her previous family described her as friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow (at times), excitable with a medium-high activity level. Around strangers Xena is friendly and outgoing. She’s lived with a 6 & 9yr olds and was gentle, exuberant, and playful with them also with adults, a cat and a Yorkie. Xena is an active dog she need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. She wasn’t comfortable around other dogs during her playgroup section. The behavior department feels that she can go to an experience home also advises against placing Xena in a home with other dogs. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest.
06/28/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Xena is muzzled prior to off-leash introduction due to concerning behavior seen in our care center (on-leash reactivity including stiffening and growling), and when introduced to the fence she stiffens, growls and snaps. It has been reported that when aroused by other dogs, Xena may redirect arousal onto human handlers. When allowed off-leash on a muzzle, Xena is low to the ground, and begins to charge after the helper while barking, growling, and snapping. She is removed from the pen. Xena arrived into our care and was cited as having lived with a smaller dog- however, their behavior in the home was not elaborated on. Based on Xena’s concerning behavior around unfamiliar dogs, the behavior department advises against placing Xena in a home with other dogs.
