06/07/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Xena came to us as an owner surrender due to the owner’s son having allergies toward dogs. According to the owner Xena lived with 3 adults a teenager and a 10 year old child. Around them she is said to be relaxed and playful with them. She also lived with another smaller dog and was relaxed and protective of the smaller dog. Xena was very shy and a bit fearful when entering the behavior room, but did show some interest in interacting with the assessor. After a bit of time Xena was still a tad nervous but did warm up to the assessor. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items. She did have timid and fearful body language during some of the items, but displayed no signs of aggression. Xena only displayed minimal interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. We believe that Xena can go to a home with an experienced adopter. Interactions should be conducted slowly and at Xena’s pace due to her fearful nature. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is fearful and timid; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is neutral, body a bit fearful, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, low and a bit fearful, tail tucked. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. According to Xena’s previous owners, Xena lived with a Pomeranian in the home and is described as relaxed and protective of the small dog in the home. They will engage in exuberant play. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Xena is very fearful at first and avoids the other dog. She becomes more relaxed, un-tucking her tail, and greets the other dog. 6/9/16 Update: Due to Xena’s behavior in her kennel- barking, lunging onto the bars and air snapping- the Behavior Department does not feel that she is a suitable candidate for the Adoptions room and that placement should be sought as soon as possible.
