According to Winter’s finder, Winter was very playful and played well with his larger dog. Winter and his dog would use their mouths to play but did not bite to break skin. The Behavior Department recommends that Winter be placed with dogs that match her calm sociability. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 7/6/17 Winter was very social during intake. Winter came right up to the counselor to greet them. She allowed to be scanned and collared with a loose wiggly body. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/7/17 Winter was very playful during exam.
ENERGY LEVEL: The finder describes winter as an energetic and enthusiastic dog. Winter displayed medium-high energy and movement throughout assessment. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the (behaviors outlined below). _X_ No young children (under 5)- Winter appears to have a high energy level, and may become mouthy, jumpy. She may do well in a home without very young children. Dog-savvy young children can be considered pending interaction. She has been quite human social with her caretakers in the care center. Potential challenges: _X_ House soiling- Winter is reported to have frequent accidents in the house, and appears not to have been housetrained in the past. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_ Destructive Behavior-Winter is reported to be chewing on furniture when left alone for long periods, so we advise future adopters to make sure to provide mentally and physically stimulating, appropriate chew toys to keep Winter occupied when left alone. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition -While she applies only light pressure, Winter was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention. whenever Winter puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways.
