05/21/17 Noted to be much quieter than normal on rounds. S/O: QAR. Not getting up for attention like he usually does. mm=pink, moist. EENT: Mod. mucoid nasal discharge and crusting. H/L: RR=28. No coughing, no dyspnea. A: CIRDC. P: Move to iso. Rx Doxycycline 100 mg. 3 Po q 24 hours x 14 days. Excellent prognosis.

05/09/17 17:43 Basic info: Whoopty is a 1 year old male AMPT who was surrendered to the ACC as a stray due to the Fact his owner had passed away. His owners family has been taking care of him for the past month but could no longer care for him. His previous owner has had him since a puppy. Whoopty has no known medical problems. Socialization: Finder stated that when around strangers Whoopty is friendly and outgoing. Whoopty has spent time around children ages 3-18 years old and he is relaxed and playful when around them. Owner stated that when playing with adults and children Whoopty is exuberant and will jump on them. When around other dogs Whoopty is very respectful and will play with them depending on the dog. Whoopty has not spent time around cats so it is unknown how he will react. Behavior: Finder states that if Whoopty does not have toys he will destroy things in the home. During fireworks and loud noises Whoopty gets nervous and will start to bark. When someone touches Whoopty food treats or toys he isn’t bothered. He also isn’t bothered if someone was to restrain, push him off the couch or disturb him while he sleeps. Whoopty likes to be bathed and brushed. He has never had his nails trimmed so it is unknown how he will react. When someone unfamiliar approaches his house or family he will bark for a few minutes but then he’s friendly with the person. For a new family to know: Finder described Whoopty as friendly affectionate and playful with a very high activity level. When at home Whoopty will follow his owner around. He likes stuffed, squeaky, rope, and ball toys. He likes to play fetch chase and tug. He has been kept mostly indoors and eats both wet and dry food. Whoopty is very much house trained and never has accidents in the home. When using the bathroom outside he will go on the grass or cement. When left alone in the yard or house he is well behaved but will destroy house hold items if he does not have toys to chew on. He has been crated but does not do well. He knows the sit, come, down and stay commands. For exercise he is used to brisk walks on the leash and off leash in the park. When on the leash he pulls very hard when off the leash he will wonder but comes back when called.

A staff member writes: Whoopty is the perfect name for this boy. When I spend time with him, he enjoys chasing tennis balls and loves to carry his squeaky toys around. He gets so excited with our games sometimes I think he will scream “Whoopty Doo”. His previous owner told us he is great with children from ages 3-18. He enjoys relaxing with the smaller kids, while playing with the older ones. The best thing about Whoopty is his treat motivation. He will love you even more if you offer him some delicious yummies!! He needs plenty of toys to keep him occupied, and will accept any attention he can get. This big boy prefers the company of a female dog, and will engage in a game of chase if solicited. Come to Brooklyn ACC and take this guy home and make your family bigger.

CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for: Whoopty A1111526 KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/9/17 Unaltered male, Stray Previously lived with: Unknown Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/11/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog mouths hand no pressure. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Summary: Whoopty was playful and social. Whoopty displayed no concerning behavior during his assessment. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Whoopty engages in play with a female dog but becomes reactive when greeting a male dog. According to Whoopty’s previous guardian, Whoopty is very respectful around other dogs and will play with them depending on the dog. The Behavior Department recommends that Whoopty be placed with female dogs that match his gentle play style.

IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 5/14/17 Today both a volunteer and an staff member reported difficulties handling Whoopty when returning him to his kennel. His kennel reactivity when being walked down the aisle- lunging and barking at each dog in their kennel- has increased and when a staff member was returning him to his kennel, he redirected towards her hand with a snap. At this time we feel that given Whoopty’s high energy and anxiousness, this behavior is likely to continue to deteriorating. Therefore, placement needs to be sought as soon as possible for his well-being. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/10/17 Whoopty allowed all handling during his initial medical examination. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Whoopty, so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Whoopty is enthusiastic, social dog and will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) _X_ Recommend no dog parks: Due to Whoopty’s reactivity towards male dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Whoopty only be socialized around other dogs in a more controlled setting. Potential challenges: _X_ On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: See In-Shelter observations. Whoopty has shown some barrier reactivity when walking past other dogs in their kennels in the care center. We cannot be certain whether this behavior will continue outside a shelter setting, but as it it unlikely to improve in this environment and as Whoopty has begun to redirect his frustration onto his handler at times, we recommend that potential adopters be aware of this behavior and prepared to safely manage it in the future.

When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Whoopty engages in play with a female dog but becomes reactive when greeting a male dog. According to Whoopty’s previous guardian, Whoopty is very respectful around other dogs and will play with them depending on the dog. The Behavior Department recommends that Whoopty be placed with female dogs that match his gentle play style. 5/11: Whoopty greets a novel female dog with soft body language. He initially solicits and engages in cooperative play, with his main objective being to mount the female. As the session continues, he is able to engage in more appropriate play. 5/12: When greeting a novel male dog, Whoopty begins to displays increasingly stiff body language and begins growling while muzzle punching the gate. They are not introduced. 5/18: Whoopty greets a novel female dog displaying alert posturing. Once in the pen he is social, checking in on her often as he explores.

Subjective: Observed Behavior – Gregarious, playful and wiggly. Allows all handling. Evidence of Cruelty seen – No. Evidence of Trauma seen – No. Objective: BARH. mm=pink, moist, CRT<2 s. HR=116, RR=pant. BCS=5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted. PLN: No enlargements noted. H/L: Lungs clear, no murmurs/arrhythmias, no dyspnea. ABD: Non painful, no masses/organomegaly palpated U/G: Male, both testicles palpable. MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat. CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities. A: Apparently healthy young adult dog. P: OK for neuter surgery. Excellent prognosis.
