09/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Whenever I meet a dog with prominent bones in their head I compare them to a unicorn, and Wesley is straight from that same magical herd! Despite his size, he’s been great on leash whenever I’ve walked him. He seems housebroken and appropriate when encountering other dogs (he’s done well in our playgroups, engaging in gentle play). He likes treats, but TOYS are really the apple of his eye! He get really excited but manages to “sit” when I ask him to before throwing one, then carries them around like treasure before plopping down on the ground and stretching his legs out with his prize between his front paws. If I initiate play with him he’ll play bow and talk to me before soaking up some affection…he’s so sweet and fun! I’m not sure why Wesley’s head looks the way it does, where he came from, or how he got to be so charming…but mostly I have no idea why he isn’t already on somebody’s couch. He’d love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC.
09/07/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Wesley came into the care centers as a stray. Wesley was a bit nervous but he allowed all handling by the counselor. During SAFER Wesley was calm and relaxed when entering the assessment room. Wesley had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor; he allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Wesley was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Wesley was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Wesley appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Playgroup:When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Wesley playbows while meeting the greeter dog. He displays loose and wiggly body language as he solicits and engages in gentle play.
09/06/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Wesley was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Wesley displays soft body language when socializing with male and female dogs. He solicits and engages in gentle, minimal body contact, play. The Behavior Department recommends that Wesley be placed in a home with dogs that match his gentle play style. 9/6: Wesley play bows while meeting the greeter dog. He displays loose and wiggly body language as he solicits and engages in gentle play. 9/8-9/9: Wesley engaged in gentle, minimal body contact play, in a group of male and female dogs. He displays soft body language and is tolerant of continually play solicitations. 9/13: Welsey solicits vocal, mouthy play with male and female dogs.
