Wesley
Hello, my name is Wesley. My animal id is #10298. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 20-Oct-2017.
Wesley 10298 is at risk for behavior concerns (Adult-Only behavior determination). We have no known history of Wesley’s behavior in his previous home. In the care center, he has been hesitant to interact, retreating and avoiding contact when approached. With a slow approach and gentle handling, Wesley allows touch and petting but remains anxious, tense, and trembling; once comfortable with his handler, Wesley begins soliciting attention. However, due to his fear level with novel people we are concerned that he will not thrive in the busy adoptions room. We recommend an adult-only home and adopters who will allow Wesley to warm up to his new home and new family at his own pace. There is no noted medical condition for Wesley at this time.
My medical notes are…

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Wesley has displayed fearful behavior in his kennel and also with novel people. He warms up to handlers with a slow approach and will display highly social behavior. He will seek attention, enjoys being picked up and petted by those he is comfortable with. Wesley has also enjoyed enrichment items once he is comfortable outside of his kennel.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Wesley may be intimidated by children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Wesley is fearful at the care center and has snapped. It is important to always go slow and give Wesley the option to walk away from any social interaction. Wesley should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Wesley’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Wesley would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
