08/08/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile Date of intake 8/7/2017 Unaltered male, owner surrender (lived in previous home for 2 years) Resource Guarding: Yes Bite history: Webster has warning snapped at family members, did not break skin. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 8/8/2017 Summary: Webster is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping at the leash. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels, we feel Webster is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 8/7/2017 Webster snarled and growled when out of kennel, but warmed up slowly throughout the day and allowed some minimal gentle handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center, Webster displays as having a medium level of energy.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope _X_Place with a New Hope partner – Webster has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding – Owner reports that Webster growls if hhis food, toys, or treats are touched. We recommend that Angela be left alone while eating to prevent rehearsal of the warning as well as to prevent escalation. _X_Handling/touch sensitivity – On several occasions in the care center Webster has given high-level warnings (growling, snapping, baring teeth). He should never be forced to submit to petting or handling when he is uncomfortable. Webster may do best initially in a calm and quiet environment. Due to how uncomfortable Webster is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time, with a period of decompression before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression – Webster has allowed minimal handling while at the care center, bolting out of kennel, or barking and lunging when attempting to leash. Due to the consistent behavior displayed in shelter, the behavior department recommends an experienced adult home only until he can acclimate to his new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Kennel presence- Webster growls and snaps from inside his kennel. It should be noted owner reports he was never crated. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Webster may show beahvior similar to what he is currently demonstrating in his kennel.
