05/21/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Watson has no clue as to what he is doing with us, in a kennel and amidst so many other dogs. His owner passed away but how would he know ? He is …just a pooch who has been so well cared for by his former master. Indeed, ten year old Watson, a Beagle/JRT mix is one good looking gent, the perfect weight and so well dressed in his silky red fox coat. I love the thick white fanion topping his tail. I gave Watson three walks yesterday as I wanted to know him better. He would not walk at first as he did not trust me and the environment. True that his hinds were a bit shaky too and doing his “business” was a little strenuous , a matter our veterinarians are looking into. He climbed the stairs and explored with caution the yard, accepted a bow, my petting but not my treats although he ate the meal in his kennel. He appeared wary at times, whined a little but at our last encounter, he rushed to his den door and was much more upbeat about being out and in my company. It is without say that Mr Watson does not belong to a shelter environment…He probably was very close to his defunct owner, may be not too socialized, very much at home and finding himself in our walls threw him off balance…I trust that Mr Watson will find his bearings with a new loving master. He will need you soon so come and meet this handsome gentleman who so dreams to spend his golden years as a once again beloved pet . Watson is at the Manhattan Care Center.
05/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Watson A1112263 KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/17/17 Neutered,Stray Other notes: Watson yelped during intake when attempting to lift him up. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 5/19/2017 Summary: Watson has snapped during his medical exam and yelped when being picked up. Due to Watson’s current medical condition/health status, he appears to be uncomfortable with touch in certain areas and we cannot be certain to what extent that is influencing these warning behaviors. Out of concern for his stress levels we feel Watson is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with other dogs, Watson ignores interaction and wanders the pen. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/171/17 During his initial medical exam Watson snapped when face was touched, cried throughout exam. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Watson so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center Watson displayed a low amount of energy. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner – The behavior department believes Watson would benefit best from placement with a New Hope Rescue who can meet his needs medically and then assess behavior once he is in a stable environment. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity – Watson has shown significant discomfort, yelped and snapped when handled in sensitive areas on his body and head. He gave appropriate warnings and we recommend the possible underlying medical issues be addressed with a veterinarian.
