07/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The origin of the name Wanda is “wanderer”…..and that’s the truth for our Wanda. She “wandered” to our care, and now is hoping to “wander” to her new forever home. And how lucky her adopter will be! Soft and gentle, dressed in a tan coat, her big eyes match her coat and meet mine with softness and love. Likely housetrained she ‘went’ as soon as we were outside and showed me lovely leash manners as we went for a short walk. A staff person wanted to meet her and Wanda softly wagged her tail in a ‘how do you do’, and when that person’s son asked if he could pet her, Wanda was so gentle and easy with the little boy it makes me wonder if her previous life included children. Wanda does that head tilt thing I just love, and she happily draped herself over my legs for petting. It was simply too hot to do much more than drape! Wanda poses for pictures like a pro, and she’s so photogenic, holding her pose to make it easy for me, I fell in love all over again. Sweet, easy and loving describes our Wanda who will wander into your heart and never leave. Be sure to meet her when you visit.
07/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Wanda came to our center after a member of the public found her as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. She was wiggly and allowed all handling during intake. Wanda pulled slightly on leash for her relief walk. She was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room, jumping onto handler’s lap. Wanda jumped up and licked assessor’s face during Look item. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, high energy and movement, open mouth pant. Wanda played along during Tag game, running and jumping, she grabbed leash towards end of game, playfully vocalizing and tugging, requiring a reset walk out of the room to relinquish. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licked assessor’s hand. Wanda playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose, wiggly body. When off leash with other dogs Wanda is uncomfortable. She will sniff the helper dog from behind but when he attempts to sniff her she will freeze and keep moving her face away. The Behavior Team feels Wanda would do best with an Experienced adopter. She may benefit from being the only resident dog, as well as obedience classes to learn leash manners and not to jump up. Wanda would benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct her enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, grabs leash to play tug with playful vocalization. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks hand Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Wanda is uncomfortable. She will sniff the helper dog from behind but when he attempts to sniff her she will freeze and keep moving her face away.
07/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Wanda has not yet been comfortable when itneracting with dogs at our care center. The behavior team feels Wanda would be most comfortable as the only resident dog until her comfort around them can be followed up outside the care center. 7/16: When off leash with other dogs Wanda is uncomfortable. She will sniff the helper dog from behind but when he attempts to sniff her she will freeze and keep moving her face away. 7/19: Wanda is anxious, paces, and doesn’t show much interest in the other dog.
