A volunteer writes:
Little Henny is with us for no fault of her own. Her owner lost his living quarters and could not keep Henny with him anymore. Wonderful comments were left upon her relinquishment. Although initially shy with strangers, Henny would be very friendly with them. She played well with children, shared in harmony and for one month her life with 2 other dogs, a Lab and a Pomeranian , had no handling issues and was very affectionate. She would be house trained and paper trained, slept in her owner’s bed and liked to chew on shoes when left alone in the house. Henny is pretty timid at the care center. When I first met her, she was squashed in a corner of her kennel and observing my in’s and out’s, walking her ward’s mates… Your turn, young lady… Henny flattened her body to the bottom of her den while slowly moving to the door. A pep talk and some caresses were very much in order but the damsel in distress was eventually and uneventfully collected in my arms and successfully brought to the ground…Free in a pen, Henny was at first a little timid and slightly skittish. Treats helping, she relaxed. She loved my treats and lit up, tail wagging, when a number of dogs came to check us at our gate. She walked well on the leash and did her business as soon as we were at the door. Henny is such a pretty gal, petite at 37 pounds and dressed in a lovely chocolate coat. She sits so obediently on command and looks at me with a face so full of feelings… Come and meet Henny at the Manhattan Care Center. She is such an endearing little girl, cute and small, good with kids and other pooches. She might be shy but would love to meet you and be chosen as your new forever best friend.
PROFILE:
Henny is a 2 yr old female pitbull mix. She was brought into ACC by her original owner’s mother, and has been living in the mothers house since Thanksgiving day 2016 with original owner. The mother already had two dogs and cannot keep Henny in her apartment because of housing restrictions. Henny’s original owner also moved in with his mother and cannot keep Henny either. She has no health problems but still has staples on her abdomen from surgery at the ASPCA.
Socialization:
From what the mother has observed of Henny living in her house for one month. Henny is friendly around strangers. She growls at first but then is friendly. She has spent time with children, age 6 and up. She is respectful, relaxed and playful with them. She plays gently, exuberantly and somewhat rough with children and adults. She has spent time living with two dogs, one Labrador and one Pomeranian. She is relaxed, playful, and respectful of them. She can sometimes be cautious, then friendly with the Labrador. She plays with them gently and exuberantly. No knowledge of spending time with cats. Henny has never bitten a person and has never bitten an animal.
Behavior:
Henny poops and pees indoors on a puppy pad or newspaper only. Otherwise she goes outside on the grass and the cement. She barks a lot when there are noises outside and chews on objects at home such as shoes, when left alone and also when at home with others. Her behavior during thunderstorms and fireworks is unknown. She is not bothered when someone touches her food or bowl while eating, takes her bone/treat away, pushes/pulls her off furniture, holds or restrains her. No knowledge of if she is reactive when disturbed while sleeping, gets a bath, gets brushes, gets nails trimmed. When someone unfamiliar approaches her house or yard, or her family member, Henny will bark and growl, but then be very friendly when someone comes into her living space.
New Family:
Henny is friendly, affectionate, and playful. She is a high activity level dog. She loves pillows (will lay on them) and loves attention. She likes playing tug of war. When at home Henny will follow people around. She has been kept mostly indoors and goes out to the yard to play/potty. She sleeps with her original owner in bed. She eats wet food because of surgery. She likes Milkbones and Beggin’ Strips. She is mostly housetrained. Does well in crate up to 8 hrs. Knows sit, stay, come commands. Well-behaved in the yard.
