RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Placement Partner _X_No children (under 13) (Potential for defensive aggression) _X_Single-pet home (See playgroup notes) _X_Recommend no dog parks (See playgroup notes; because Wally is so uncomfortable at this time in a social setting with other dogs, a decompression period should be allowed before attempts to work on this behavior. 09/06/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/06/16 13:32 Basic Information: Wally is a 3 year old neutered Havanese. He was bought from a pet store when he was a puppy. He was surrendered because his previous owner is moving and can no longer keep him. The last time he went to the vet was 3 months ago. Socialization: Around strangers Wally is aggressive initially, he barks and growls but once he’s introduced by previous owner with treat he is friendly. When he plays with adults he is exuberant. Around children ages one through 5 he is friendly and outgoing. He lived with a 3 year old spayed spaniel since he was a one year. With her he was relaxed and playful and exuberant at play. He has spent time with cats and was very tolerant. Behavior: Wally has never bitten a person or animal and he isn’t bothered by storms or fireworks. If his food bowl was touched he would ignore the hand and continue to eat with relaxed body. If a treat or toy was taken from him while eating or playing he would watch to toy closely and keep his head down. He isn’t bothered if he is taken off furniture. He is friendly if he is held or restrained. He isn’t bothered if he is disturbed while sleeping, given a bath, if his coat is brushed or nails are trimmed. He was friendly if an unfamiliar person approached his home or previous owner. For a New Family to Know: Wally is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and excitable with a very high activity level. The thing his previous owner liked most about him was; he’s very playful. When his previous owner was home he would tend to follow him around. He liked to play with chew toys and ropes. His favorite games are tug and fetch. He was kept indoors only and at night he slept in his dog bed. He ate dry Wellness with a little water. He is house trained and rarely had accidents indoors. He is well behaved when left alone indoors or in the yard. He is crate trained and does well for 8 hours. He knows the cues sit, lay down, leave it and quiet. He was walked 3 times daily. On leash he pulls lightly and off leash he wanders but comes when called. Behavior during intake: Wally had a wagging tail and relaxed bodt. When I would attempt to interact or look his way he would growl, bark and lungs. At one point he

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Unaltered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults and children 1-5 years old. Behavior toward children: Friendly Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed and playful Behavior toward cats: tolerant FG/RG: No behavior Issues Bite history: Not reported Housetrained: yes, rarely had accidents indoors Energy level/descriptors: High energy Other notes: Around strangers, Wally is uncomfortable at first he would growl and barks until warm up with treats. AGGRESSION ASSESSMENT: 9/7/16 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit tense, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, mouth closed Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, or repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog may be crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy Summary: Due to Wally barking, growling, and showing teeth, at times from very minimal approach, the Behavior Team feels he would do best with a New Hope partner. It should be noted that Wally was receptive with the assessor and tolerated all handling, but shortly after growled at another staff member. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: 9/7/16 When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Wally keeps to himself, and offers defensive correction when approached face to face. His owner reports he “lived with a 3 year old spayed spaniel since he was a year old; with her he was relaxed and playful and exuberant at play.” The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction as well as allowing Wally time to acclimate to his new surroundings before introducing him to any resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/06/16 During his initial examination, Wally was unable to be touched as he displayed fearful behavior; trembling, growling, exposing teeth, increasing distance from handlers. ENERGY LEVEL:
