06/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 06/13/17 Neutered, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 06/22/17 Summary: Wagstin is underage for a SAFER assessment. PLAYGROUP: When engaging in play, Wagstin becomes over-aroused -jumping and low growling- and requires handler interruptions to maintain proper play. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 06/13/17 When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Wagstin is initially nervous but is quickly able to solicited and engage in play. Wagstin came into the Care Center as a stray so his previous behavior around other dogs is unknown. He was surrendered with four littermates. The Behavior Department recommends that Wagstin be placed with playful resident dogs and that his future guardians continue his socialization with other dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 06/13/17 During his initial medical examination, Wagstin allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center Wagstin has been active and enthusiastic. Due to the anxiety seen, he may need some guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Wagstin will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience; Wagstin will need an experienced owner who can help him control his impulses when interacting with other dogs) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended
