A volunteer writes: Virgil is a walking meatloaf with a 110% chance of sweeping you off your feet! With his looks and charm, I don’t doubt for a moment that he was a household name in his old neighborhood. He is sort of a big baby: when I first met him it took a good 15 minutes to coax him into taking the scary step down from his cage (I later learned he had to be carried off of our transport van because that step was even higher and scarier!). He seems very housebroken, has been easy on leash after he’s relieved himself, loves treats in a drooly way (he also “sit”s like a champ), and loves to play with toys (but tuckers out quickly, at least in this summer heat!). His former owner tells us that he is well socialized, gets along with most dogs, and is even a friend to felines!! He appreciates help scratching his itches (he likely has some allergies) and, as you might expect, he makes little piggy grunty noises. He seems soo sweet, endearing and well-behaved…please come check him out at Brooklyn ACC and make him your best friend!

SAFER ASSESSMENT:
8/15/17
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, bit distracted.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Toy 1: No interest.
Summary: Virgil displayed soft body posture, and was social towards the assessor.
PLAYGROUP:
When off leash at the Care Center, Virgil is slightly uncomfortable around the novel male and female dogs. He displays a tense posture, and low growls when offered playful solicitations. While exploring the pens, he occasionally checks in with the other dogs. One one occassion, Virgil rushed a familiar neutered male, jumped on him and grabbed his neck. He released after a horn was sounded and did not puncture or break any skin. The two dogs are housed next to each other which may have precipitated this reaction from Virgil. Virgil’s previous owner reported that he gets along well with other dogs but provided no further details. The Behavior Department recommends that Virgil be placed in a home with well socialized and respectful dogs that match his calm demeanor.
