07/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Veron came into the care center as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He has been difficult to handle in the care center, wary of interacting and tolerating only limited handling. In the SAFER room he sniffed the floor intensely and was difficult to distract. He was tense but approached the assessor with coaxing. He allowed himself to be slowly positioned for Look and for Sensitivity, but he leaned away during the first pass of massaging down his side. At the start of the second pass, Veron gave a quick growl and then snapped at the assessor’s hand. He did not make contact, did not escalate or continue snapping though the assessor remained close. This was distinctly a warning not intended to harm, but due to the quick escalation and Veron’s clear discomfort with close proximity, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can address his medical condition, provide reward-based behavior modification and counterconditioning/desensitization, and then re-evaluate his behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. The remaining handling items were skipped. Veron was not interested in the toy. He was initially nervous when greeting other dogs, but warmed up quickly and seemed more relaxed with dogs than he is with humans. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 5. Dog growls and snaps. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Veron is nervous as he enters the pen with a tucked tail. He becomes more relaxed, un-tucking his tail, as he greets the other dog. He wanders in the pen displaying soft body language.

07/14/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Veron was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. 7/14: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Veron is nervous as he enters the pen with a tucked tail. He becomes more relaxed, un-tucking his tail, as he greets the other dog. He wanders in the pen displaying soft body language.
