08/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: We have quite a number of lovely seniors here at the Manhattan Care Center. They are very dear and project dignity and wisdom while attracting our sympathy and love. Vera is part of that “crew”. A medium size little gal she is, all dressed in black and looking at me, warily, with sparkling chesnut eyes. Her muzzle is grey and like the rest of her body, feels so soft to the touch. Vera is very timid, hand shy and submissive with people as well as with her peers in playgroups. She needs a lot of encouragement but at our third walk, I got a smile and a waggy tail. Nothing feels better than seeing a dog coming out of his/her shell. Vera still has a long way to go to become a socialite but we love steps forward, even tiny ones. Vera walks tentatively and shakily on the leash, does her business and is not comfortable with the street noises and barking pooches. She prefers sitting by my side, on the side walk and being caressed. She feels safer that way, mostly when she is with a friend, even newly made… I look forward to seeing more of Vera. She needs gentle care, compassion and love and will give back what dogs do best….Loyalty and unconditional Love.
08/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Vera came to the care center after a member of the public found her as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. She was shy upon intake, tail tucked, lip licking, but allowed handling. She was timid during her initial medical exam, but licked staff and crawled into their laps, shaking. Vera walked nicely on leash for her relief walk. She was nervous upon entering SAFER assessment room, but slowly approached staff, licking hands. Vera allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, tail tucked, ears back. Vera was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, focused on exit, but approached assessor at end of game with gentle coaxing. Vera did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licks assessor’s hand and leaned in. She showed minimal interest in Toy, more focused on being affectionate with handler. When off leash with other dogs, Vera is fearful, avoids, whale eye. The Behavior Team feels Vera would do well with an Average adopter, but may require a slow approach initially. Once comfortable, Vera is very affectionate, warm and interested in interacting/snuggling with handler. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, relaxed Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes soft, tail tucked, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on exit, approaches at end of game with gentle coaxing. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks assessor’s hand gently, leans in Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, focused on interacting with handler, leans in Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Vera is fearful, avoids, whale eye.
08/14/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
8/14: When off leash with other dogs, Vera is fearful and avoidant. She runs away and is ‘whale eyed’ when approached. The behavior team feels Vera would be most comfortable as the only resident dog while acclimating into new surroundings in a home, and her behavior around dogs should be followed up outside of a shelter environment. She arrived as a stray, so Vera’s history around dogs is unknown. 8/18: Vera greets through the fence with a wag, howver continues to be fearful and avoidant of approach.
