11/01/2016 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 1 – NORMAL , Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 53.6 LBS.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Single-pet home: While Venus is quite human-social, her reactivity and potential aggression toward other dogs is highly concerning. We feel strongly that Venus needs help from a force-free behavior modification specialist to address her offensive behaviors, to help address her anxiety around other dogs, and to make sure she can be safely managed. Please see the “Playgroup” section of this write up and the GroupBehavior entry for additional details. _X_Recommend no dog parks
09/26/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/26/16 14:30 Basic information: Venus is a 7 year old spayed American pit bull terrier. She was bought from a breeder in 2009. She was surrendered because her previous owner is unable to care for her due to recent medical issues. The last time she went to the vet was 2 years ago and she has no known injuries or health problems. Socialization: Around strangers Venus is friendly and outgoing and exuberant when she plays with adults. She lived with children ages 0 to 14 years old and when she plays she is exuberant but was taught not to jump on children. She spent time with an 11 year old Shih Tzu that was aggressive towards her but she was respectful. She lived with a cat all her life and was relaxed and playful. Behavior: Venus has never attempted to bite a person or animal. If her food bowl was touched while eating she would move away and wait patiently for the hand to be removed. She isn’t bothered if she is taken off furniture, restrained or disturbed while sleeping. She enjoys baths. She isn’t bothered if her coat is brushed or if her nails are trimmed. She was friendly if an unfamiliar person approached her home or previous owner. For a New Family to Know: Venus is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, mellow but also excitable with a medium activity. The two things her previous owner liked most about her were; she’s mellow and friendly. When her previous owner was home she would tend to follow her around. She liked to play with chew toys and played fetch and tug. She was kept mostly indoors and at night she slept anywhere. She is house trained but had accidents if not taken outside. However, she used the bathroom in the same spot. She ate Purina dry food. When left alone indoors and in the yard she was well behaved. She knows the cues; sit, come, down, stay and out. For exercise she played in the yard. On leash she pulls and off leash she wanders but comes when called. Previous owner stated Venus does not like to be outside when it is raining or snowing. Behavior during intake: Venus immediately approached me, stood up and licked my hand. She allowed me to pet her and collar her. She sat with treats and took them gently. She showed no signs of aggression.
10/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Venus and I became best friends pretty much from the second we met! So, let me tell you about my best friend–Venus knows “sit,” and she takes treats gently from your fingers. She loves to give hugs and kisses, loves to go on walks, and is a very good walker. She does not always like to see other dogs, but her attention is easily refocused on walking. Venus is an all-around wonderful gem of a girl, so if you are also looking for a new best friend, Venus is the one for you!

Summary: Venus displayed no behavioral concerns during her assessment; Venus displayed social and friendly behavior towards her handlers. PLAYGROUP: Venus’s previous owner cites “she spent time with an 11 year old Shih Tzu that was aggressive towards her but she was respectful”. Most recently, Venus has displayed concering offensive behaviors toward other dogs off leash – when muzzled for interaction, she rushes and attempts to bite the male helper dog whilst growling, and is difficult to distract. Handlers have also reported that she is reactive to dogs on the street in passing, barking, growling, and pulling hard on leash with a tense body. At this time, the behavior department recommends that Venus be the only resident dog in the home, and that future caretakers of Venus exercise caution when walking her in areas where there may be high volumes of dog traffic. The assitance of a trainer or behaviorist who uses positive reinforcement-based methods is recommended to adress these aforementioned concerns. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/26/16 During her initial medical examination, Venus appeared friendly and readily allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL:

09/27/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Venus’s previoous owner cites “she spent time with an 11 year old Shih Tzu that was aggressive towards her but she was respectful”. The assitance of a trainer or behaviorist who uses positive reinforcent-based methods is recommended to adress these aforementioned concerns. 9/27: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Venus appears interested in interaction, and approaches to sniff. She offers correction for sexually motivated behavior. 10/25: Venus is highly aroused and tense upon entering the yard. She pulls hard toward the other dogs whilst barking. Upon entering the pen, a male dog approaches and offers polite greeting. Venus immediately escalates, growling and snapping at the other dog. When handlers attempt to separate Venus, she continues to pull and rush toward him. The interaction is ceased by grabbing Venus’s leash and walking her out the pen. 11/1: Venus is muzzled for this interaction based on observation made during previous interaction. When Venus enters the pen and immediate charges after the helper dog, growling and tense. Once she reaches the male helper dog, she jumps on his back, continuing to growl, and attempts to bite at his neck. She is difficult to interrupt using auditory interruptors and has to be physically pulled away from the helper dog. She continues to growl and react to the presence of dogs on her way out of the yard.
