01/02/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Shy but friendly, Mr. Ven was left behind when his person moved. He’s gorgeous in his well-groomed latte and white coat. His amber eyes meet mine as I promise him a walk. Ven seems housetrained and is a slow and pokey ‘stop and smell the roses’ kind of a walker. His face is soft and has a quizzical look about it, while his eyes look like they are made up by a renowned make up artist–gorgeous! Showing off his sit, he takes treats softly. Off leash, Ven enjoys toys and a squeaky tennis ball–which he’s obviously not used to. So every time he picks it up and it squeaks, he drops it quickly and looks at it with a head tilt. Hey–you’re not supposed to squeak, what’s going on?! He is so funny and so smart, he knows what he knows, and this is new and to be reckoned with. He keeps picking it up, the ball keeps squeaking, he drops it and looks at it again and again. I loved watching him and couldn’t help but laugh. Soft, gentle, and shy, Ven enjoys the company of other dogs, and in his first play session with a female, romped in bouncy play. He’s ready to find a person who will get him tennis balls that don’t squeak (I mean seriously what’s up with that?), and a lifetime of treats and cuddles. Easy going Ven is hoping you’ll ask to meet him today. Another volunteer writes: Ven is always so respectful in his kennel, looking up with soulful eyes and a wistful expression as I near. How can I not spend time with him? He’s gorgeous, friendly, easy on the leash, likely housetrained, loves toys and balls, and the more time we spent together the more affectionate he became. Paws in my lap to make it easier to reach me for a kiss, he’s soft and sweet, and I swoon. But don’t just take my word for it. The comments from other volunteers, all noted on his walking log, speak of a friendly, easy and good dog that volunteers love to spend time with. We can’t all be wrong, so come meet him, give him time to get over some initial shyness, and I know you won’t want to leave without him. He’s a joy!
12/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Unaltered male Other notes: Ven was tense during intake with a low body, Ven took a few days to warm up here at the center. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/30/2016 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is wagging, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans in and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, mouth closed, lip lick Tag: 2. Dog displacement scratches at beginning of game, follows at end of leash, a bit distracted, unresponsive to touch. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, brief enthusiasm when presented, quickly loses focus. Summary: Ven allowed all handling during assessment, but was a bit aloof on his relief walk, not fully engaging with handler. He may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, preferably with treats. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Ven engages in play with female dogs in the care center, and appears polite while greeting them. He has been observed to stiffen and growl when greeting male dogs through a barrier and has not been introducted to them off leash. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Ven and polite, tolerant female dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/22/2016 Ven was nervous during his medical exam, allowed handling but tail was tucked, body low, giving whale eye. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Ven manages his discomfort well, but has been tense and aloof with his human handlers. He will benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, preferably with treats, as well as initially going home to a calm, quiet, structured environment so Ven can relax and warm up and acclimate to his new surroundings at his own pace. Reward based/treat training may help him when meeting new people and new situations. We recommend only force-free, positive reinforcement-based methods as more aversive techniques are likely to increase his fear level.
