02/25/17 09:10 Notes from police: Reportedly dog walked into car from apartment building via rabies pole without fuss during police pick up. In the car dog was whining but did not growl and approach officers while car was in motion. During intake: Counselor lasso’d Velvet in cop car with leash and she allowed herself to be lassod and walked out of car. Counselor was able to collar. Velvet was nervous at first with tail tucked between legs but did not stall while walking into MACC. Velvet rolled on her back to let officer pet belly, counselor pet belly and Velvet’s tail begain wagging. She allowed counselor to get down on ground and pet her on her face and all over her back. Velvet had a soft face and wagging tail, but seems scared.

03/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/25/17 Spayed, Stray Bite history: Yes, Velvet bit a person in the apartment where she was living, circumstances and severity of the bite are not known. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/5/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is down, body stiff, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 4. Dog growls. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Velvet appeared social when in the assessment room, soliciting attention from people. She was fearful throughout her assessment, having a tense, low body. She growled when her paw was handled for squeeze. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Pending. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/25/17 During her initial medical exam, Velvet was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Velvet so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Velvet’s discomfort with handling, as well as her bite history in which the severity of the bite is not known, we recommend an adult only home at this time. _x_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to her bite history, as well as her discomfort with handling, we recommend Velvet be placed with a New Hope partner in an adult only foster home where her behavior can be re-evaluated after a period of decompression. We recommend only force-free, positive reinforcement training. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity (Velvet growled when her paw was touched on her assessment, displaying discomfort with some handling. It is important to always go slow and give Velvet the option to walk away from any social interaction. Velvet should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Velvet’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Velvet would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. ) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Velvet has bitten in her previous home and she growled on her assessment when her paw was touched. Though observed to be human-social, Velvet may need time to warm up to the handler as she initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Velvet to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations.)
