Velvet
Hello, my name is Velvet. My animal id is #17452. I am a female black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 02-Jan-2018.
Velvet is at risk for behavior concerns (New Hope Only). Velvet has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. Because she is so uncomfortable, Velvet does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to bite upon direct contact.
My medical notes are…

Basic Information:: Velvet is a medium long hair black mixed breed dog.
Date of intake:: 1/2/2018
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no known history
Date of assessment:: 1/5/2018
Toy:: 1. No interest.
Summary:: Velvet appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. She has also allowed minimal handling from her caretakers. Out of concern for her stress levels and her response to restraint, we feel Velvet is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: Velvet was surrender as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 1/03: When off leash at the Care Center, Velvet greets the male helper dog with a neutral posture. She spends the rest of her session exploring the pens, while keeping to herself.
Date of intake:: 1/2/2018
Summary:: Upon intake Velvet had a loose body, open mouth, low tail and sniffed counselor when approached.
Date of initial:: 1/3/2018
Summary:: Tense, nervous, whale eyed; muzzled for exam
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: New Hope partner: Velvet has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Velvet has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, she displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because she is so uncomfortable, Velvet does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to bite upon direct contact.
