11/04/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/04/16 13:11 Upon intake dog was very nervous. He was trembling and drooling a lot. He kept his head low while he was in the lobby. He allowed counselor to pet him and walk him outside. He allowed all handling. As per the client Vegas is a kind and friendly dog that is pretty active even though he is an older guy. He enjoys going for walks outside and running around the yard chasing his tennis ball. He is friendly and outgoing and likes to get plenty of belly rubs from adults. Vegas is 11 years old and has lived in the home with 3 adults and no children. He will allow a child to pet him if his owner is holding him on a leash but he has never spent any personal time with kids. He allows strangers to approach him as well and does not seem bothered by them. He has been socialized with other dogs because his owner used to take him to the dog park where he would run and play with large as well as small dogs. He has ever seemed to have any issues with them. When he no longer wants to play he simply walks away to a secluded area. He has never been around cats. Only in passing and he does not seem to be interested in them at all. When strangers approach the home he will give a loud and aggressive bark but once he is able to smell them he calms down. Vegas is house trained. He rarely has accidents in the home. He is walked twice a day and stays in crate overnight. He is well behaved in the crate at night and does not mind being in it. He eats a mix of wet and dry food. He likes treats preferably bacon. He walks easy on the leash outside and does not do much pulling at all. He is calm and easy when being bathed. He does not struggle of resist. He allows you to brush his coat but his nails were never cut by the owner only the groomer. He is not bothered if you touch him while he is eating but if you try to take or move his food his body will tense up, he may show teeth, he will definitely growl and he will snap at you. He won’t lunge but he will make a huge fuss until it is given back to him.

11/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Neutered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: 3 adults Behavior toward children: Minimal exposure to children, but will allow petting when the owner is holding his leash Behavior toward dogs: Lots of time at the dog park, he interacted appropriately with other dogs Behavior toward cats: Minimal exposure, has ignored cats he sees in the past. FG/RG: If his food bowl is touched or moved he tenses, may bare teeth, growls, and snaps. Bite history: Not reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: None given Other notes: Crate trained, likes bacon SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/8/16 Due his current medical condition/health status, Vegas is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. The behavior department believes Vegas would benefit best from placement with a New Hope partner who can meet his needs medically and then assess behavior once in a stable environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Vegas to new and unfamiliar situations. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 11/5/16: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Vegas greets a novel female dog displaying neutral body language. He mostly keeps to himself, displaying look aways when the female dog greets him face to face. He spends his time exploring the pen. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/4/16: During his initial medical examination, Vegas allowed all handling and restraint. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to the food guarding behavior reported, as well as our inability to fully evaluate handling, we recommend an adult-only home for Vegas at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: See Known History section. We recommend positive reinforcement behavior modification to change Vegas’s response to having his food bowl approached, as well as management to prevent Vegas from rehearsing the guarding behavior.
