05/09/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Take your pick — high end clothing and accessories, or Rudolph Valentino the actor who was known for being a “great lover”. Our Valentino is actually a combination of both! He’s gorgeous and elegant in his latte color coat, his amber eyes sparkling at making new friends. And he’s a lover, in my lap for kisses and hugs, tail wagging at our connection. We’re told by his short term adopter that he’s spent time with children and was relaxed and tolerant of them, can play rough with adults but knows when to stop, enjoys being brushed, doesn’t guard his stuff, is “very” housetrained, and well behaved when left home alone. Like all great lovers, Valentino wants to be your one and only, as he doesn’t seem to get along with other dogs. He wants to be the cream in your coffee, the cream cheese on your bagel, the jelly on your peanut butter, the filling in your Oreo cookie — well, you get it. He’s the perfect complement to his person. Valentino loves treats and takes them gently, and is ready for a lifetime of love, treats, cuddles and more love.

No aggression reported on Valentino’s part Housetrained: No (no additional details given) Energy level/descriptors: Valentino is described as friendly, playful, and excitable SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/15/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is down, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Valentino was social in the assessment room but he became a bit tense with up close handling. He did allow all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Valentino has a reported history of altercation with other dogs in dog park settings. Valentino has been able to interact successfully with select female dogs during controlled, supervised interaction in the care center. He has been observed to become tense in reactive in the presence of other male dogs. The behavior department recommends a single pet residence for Valentino, as well as recommending that any future introductions be conducted on a one on one basis to respectful female dogs.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/4/17: During his second intake exam, Valentino allowed all handling and was distracted by the cats in carriers next door. ENERGY LEVEL: Valentino’s previous owner described him as having a medium level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 5/22/17: Valentino has been showing signs of stress in the care center, including barking without any obvious trigger and increasing barrier reactivity. He is lunging and barking at other dogs in the care center, behavior that was also noted in his previous home. We recommend that he move into a stable home environment quickly and that he be kept away from other dogs while this behavior is further investigated. He may need a counterconditioning and desensitization protocol to address his reaction to other dogs and to build positive associations in these situations. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below): _X_Single pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Valentino is reported to have gotten into scuffles and bitten another dog at the dog park. While he has been able to be with other dogs in a controlled environment at the care center, he has shown that he is not able to appropriately interact in a public dog park. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: While social most of the time, Valentino became a bit fearful during up close handling on his assessment, backing away from the assessor with a tense body. It is important to always go slow and give Valentino the option to walk away from any social interaction. Valentino should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting petting or handling. It should always be Valentino’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Valentino would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Valentino has been observed to react to other dogs, lunging towards them, and barking. Valentino may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
