08/01/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Unique A1120199 is at risk for concerns over her fear level. Her previous owner describes a playful, affectionate dog in the home but Unique has been uncomfortable with her new caretakers and with other dogs in the care center. She warms up with time and gives appropriate signals, moving away when she has the option, but when visited in her kennel she growls and demonstrates fearful body language and therefore is unlikely to do well in our busy adoptions room.

07/29/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/29/17 21:07 Basic information: Unique is a 1 yr old dog who was gotten from a breeder and was kept in the same home since she was a puppy. Unfortunately due to too many pets she could not be kept. She was last brought to the vet last year for shots. Socialization: Around strangers and children Unique is described as friendly/outgoing, relaxed and respectful and plays gentle with them. Unique has been socialized with dogs and cats and is usually playful. She has no records of her ever biting another animal or person. She has also been socialized with birds and she was a bit curious but then payed them no mind. Behavior: Unique is known to have good behavior and during fireworks and loud storms she is a bit nervous and attempts to hide. Unique enjoys bath time, being brushed & having his nails trimmened and is unbothered when someone attempts to touch his food, toys or treat when hes eating or being pushed off of furniture and will bark when unfamiliar people approach her home or owner. For a New Family to Know: Unique is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, excitable, confident, somewhat anxious and independent. She has a medium activity level, enjoys belly rubs, will follow you around when home with you, likes to play with balls, stuffed animals and squeak toys and loves to play tug. She has been kept mostly indoors, prefers to sleep on her own bed, ate dry dog food Pedigree 2x a day, is considered very house trained and well behaved when she is left alone at home, has never been crate trained, likes a to be walked at least 2-3x a day, does pull lightly on leash and off leash will wander but comes when he is called. She also knows the commands sit, stay, come and down. Intake: Upon intake she allowed minimal handling, being collared and having her picture taken. She occasionally growled at the counselor and had a tense body as well.

A volunteer writes: Unique is uniquely beautiful! Her gleaming coat is as soft as the finest velvet, her face, expressive, and her figure, perfect. She’s a bit shy at first, needing time to warm up, which is understandable considering she’s lost her person, her home, and the kitty with whom she lived. We’re also told she lived with birds and ignored them, is friendly to all including children, enjoys baths, doesn’t guard her stuff, loves belly rubs, sleeps on her own bed, is “very” housetrained, knows ‘sit’, ‘stay’ ‘come’ and ‘down’, and is well behaved when left home alone. How’s that for a rock star resume!! After our getting-to-know-you period, Unique enjoyed tossing a toy around, coming in for petting, showing off her sit for a treat which she snuffles gently from my fingers, and getting playful and bouncy. When she tossed a toy high into the air and it landed in the pool, as much as I encouraged her to go in after it, she wouldn’t. Next time! Unique’s leash manners are lovely, and once it was time to go back into her kennel, she hopped in like a pro. She’s a terrific young pup, making the best out of her topsy turvey new life and doing a good job. Ready to find her soul mate and a new person to love, Miss uniquely beautiful Unique is hoping you’ll stop by today and ask to meet her.

Summary: Unique appeared uncomfortable being positioned for some of the handling items, moving away from the assessor. She displayed fearful behavior but gave appropriate signals by moving away. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 7/31: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Unique displays a stiff body. When approached face to face, she freezes further. She follows the male greeter and attempts to T his shoulders with stiff, uncomfortable posture. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Unique had a tense body, growled at the counselor, and allowed minimal handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/29/17 During her initial medical exam, Unique was tense but slowly warmed up. ENERGY LEVEL: Unique’s previous owner described her as having a medium level of activity. She is a young, enthusiastic, dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Unique may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. Older, resectful children who are comfortable should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Unique is fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Unique the option to walk away from any social interaction. Unique should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Unique’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Unique would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
