Manhattan Center
My name is TYSON. My Animal ID # is A1116658.
I am a male white and brown labrador retr mix. The shelter thinks I am about 3 YEARS old.
I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 06/27/2017 from NY 10009, owner surrender reason stated was MOVE2NYCHA.
07/05/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Tyson A1116658 is at-risk due to his dog reactivity becoming increasingly difficult to manage in shelter. The behavior appears inconsistent as Tyson reacts poorly to select dogs (lunging, baring teeth, snapping on leash).

07/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Saaaaay cheese! Tyson is a one-dog smile factory and a born model, his gorgeous looks surpassed only by his beautiful spirit. He meets the world with an open heart and the bearing of a King, loves toys of all sorts and will come, sit, stay and shake paw (both sides!) for a kind word and a tasty treat. From the top of his kissable nose to the tip of his wagging tail, he glows with good health and the TLC that only a caring home can offer, and it’s clear he was a well-trained and most probably well-loved pet only yesterday. Tyson does pull a little on leash but he listens nicely and will even ‘walk himself’ by taking the rope gently in his mouth and trotting out to the yard–so cute! Energetic and always on the go, there isn’t a sport he won’t try or a game he won’t play. Tennis ball fetch, tug-o-war or a round of follow the leader are all guaranteed to bring sunny smiles, and Tyson’s happy to share his toys too, hopping up on the bench for a kiss’n’snuggle session with or without one in his mouth. His behavior assessment is filled with accolades, though he still needs some training when it comes to interacting with other dogs, and everyone who meets him leaves with an extra spring in their step and a smile on their face. Tyson is at our Manhattan Care Center, just waiting for a new family to love.
06/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 6/27/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/27/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Grabs leash but immediately let’s go. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Tyson displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment and was social throughout. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 7/27: Tyson stiffens hard barks, and growls when greeting the female helper dog. A muzzle is applied before conducting off leash introduction. When introduced, Tyson is tense when approaching to sniff and greet. When the helper dog attempts to walk closer, Tyson stiffens, growls, and charges forward, then retreats. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Tyson was active and tense. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: During his initial medical exam, Tyson was social, anxious, and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Tyson so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Tyson has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Tyson may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
