I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 02/03/2017 from NY 10473, owner surrender reason stated was BITEPEOPLE.

02/03/17 16:51 Basic Information Tyson is a 4 year old neutered Akita. Owner is surrendering his because Tyson bit owner’s granddaughter. Owner bought him from a breeder four years ago. Owner state Tyson has no medical issues and last saw a vet on 08/27/16 for vaccinations. Socialization Tyson is friendly around strangers. Tyson has lived and spent time around kids of all ages. Owner stated Tyson tolerates all sorts of handling from the kids. Tyson would allow kids to pet him and exuberantly play with him. Owner stated Tyson does not really play but loves to be petted. Tyson loves to play outside and chase squirrels. Tyson has not lived or spent time with dogs, cats, or any other kind of animal. Tyson has never bitten another animal. Tyson bit a child on 02/02/2017 breaking skin. The bite occurred when the child was walking towards him with her open arms. The child was one year old. Behavior Owner stated Tyson has no behavior issues. He will hide and shakes during thunder storms. Owner stated Tyson does not guard food, treats of any kind, or toys. He tolerates all handling. Owner has never trimmed his nails. Tyson will bark if someone knocks on the door but is not bothered if someone unfamiliar approaches his owner. For a New Family to Know Tyson is described as friendly, affectionate, and mellow with a high activity level. He will follow his owner around at home. He likes to play with balls that make sound. He likes to play fetch. He was kept mostly indoors with access to a yard. He slept on the floor. He was fed a high brand salmon flavored dry dog food. Owner fed him a large amount once a day. He is house-trained and prefers to potty on grass. He is well behaved when left home alone as well as in the yard. He has never been crated. He knows commands sit and come. For exercise owner lets him play in the yard. He pulls lightly and wanders and comes back when called off the leash. Behavior during Intake Tyson tolerated handling. He would lay his head on your leg when you pet him. He would flinch at sudden noises or if someone placed their hand on him. No signs of aggression were displayed during the intake procedure.

Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Allows them to pet and play with him. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: Yes, Tyson bit a one year old child when the child was walking towards him with open arms. The bite broke skin and required stitches. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Tyson is described as friendly, affectionate, and mellow with a high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/12/17 Summary: Tyson has allowed only minimal handling during his stay at the care center. He will back away and growl when touched. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Tyson is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
