07/21/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Tyson wears my favorite type of coat: Tiger Brindle, bright orange like a Tiger of Bengale. Our Tyson is no tiger, though. He is as timid as a mouse and needs a gentle approach and soft words to come slowly out of his shell. He accepts my leash and off we go to the yard where I set him free. He accepts my caresses, is a bit handshy and is quick to almost flatten to the ground or hide under the bench. He comes when I call him but seems to wonder what I might do next. We stay a while in a pen where he briefly runs after a ball and tries to get it out of the wading pool. He does not care for my treats. He does not sit on command. He shows interest in playing tag, and the start of a smile comes up on his face. Tyson is so serious and submissive, at least with us. He is a bit hesitant to go to the street, but eventually agrees to a stroll around the block. Other dogs are met, uneventfully. Tyson voids without marking. Tyson was much better toward the end of our encounter which indicates to me that once in a home, cared for, safe and loved, he will likely bloom into a wonderful companion. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center and make him yours.
07/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Tyson walks calmly on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Tyson had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Tyson is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Tyson is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: Tyson continues to be social with male and female puppies. He engages in gentle and dainty play.
