03/07/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/07/16 19:35 Basic Info: Tyson A1066949 is a 1yr old male brown brindle & white AMPBT mix who was bought off the street as a puppy & is being surrendered due to the owner no longer having time for him. He hasn’t been seen by a veterinarian and currently has no known health issues. Socialization: Around strangers Tyson is shy for a few minutes but doesn’t seem to like men at all. He’s lived with a 6, 10 & 13yr olds and was gentle, relaxed, very playful & respectful also with the adults in the home. Tyson hasn’t lived with other animals and when he spots a dog on the streets he barks, growls, snarls and lunges at them especially male dogs. Tyson has never bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: During storms/fireworks Tyson isn’t bothered. He isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved or with being moved off of furniture. Tyson is friendly during bath time, having his nails trimmed, being brushed, being held/restrained and if someone unfamiliar approaches the home/family member unless it’s a male man then he’ll bark at them. For A New Family to Know: Tyson is friendly, affectionate & playful with a very high activity level. When the owner is home Tyson follows them around. He enjoys ball toys and games of fetch, chase & tug. Tyson is mostly an indoor only dog who sleeps in his crate & is walked 2x a day & he doesn’t pull on his leash. Tyson eats dry Eukanuba food 2x a day, also cooked chicken. He will go in his crate as he’s in a crate most of the day as the owner had him temporarily staying with someone who has multiple dogs Tyson didn’t get along with. Tyson’s known commands are “sit”, “stay”, “down” & “come”. Intake Behavior: Tyson allowed minimal handling. He had a stiff body & appeared tense, Tyson allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of with assistance from the owner. He was then asked to go into the kennel and walked in.
03/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Spring may be just around the corner but there’s still a slight chill in the air. You want to stay under the covers most mornings, pull down the shades, and snuggle up to something warm. Well I can’t think of a better “something” than chocolate and caramel-colored Tyson. Surrendered to our care for the oft-used “personal problem,” Tyson is only one year-old but looking in his eyes you can almost see a full life lived. He often wears a sweetly worried expression across his face when a pup so young should have no cause for concern. Terrific leash manners also imply an older soul. He walks calmly next to me on our way to the park, does his business right away, and isn’t remotely jumpy or mouthy like his boisterous peers. Later, free in a pen, he indulges me for many minutes as I snap, snap, snap his photo, move him to the shade, reposition the bandana that so brings out that brindleicious coat. For all of it he’s rewarded with many treats which he takes gently from my hand. Yes, this boy is a gentleman. Once we’ve concluded our photo session another pup arrives in a neighboring pen and here is where the puppy in Tyson springs to life. He jumps, whines, and play bows over and over again, willing the fence away and his new neighbor to respond in kind. Unfortunately neither happens and our young boy grows considerably frustrated, resulting in forceful barks. Even gentlemen have temper tantrums from time to time! I call him over for some soothing pets and ear rubs and, for a moment, that sweetly worried expression fades away. All is forgotten, and Tyson closes his eyes as the sun hits his face. No, such a young boy shouldn’t have any worries nor should he grow up surrounded by concrete and high walls. Come satisfy your sweet tooth with our chocolate and caramel boy. Tyson is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
03/09/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Tyson came to us as an owner surrender on 3/9/16. According to the owner Tyson doesn’t get along well men or other dogs. The owner reported that when around other dogs Tyson will bark, growl, snarl and lunge at them especially if met with other male dogs. Tyson has lived with children from the ages of 6-13 and is recorded to being relaxed and playful around them. Tyson was very interested in interacting with a male assessor when entering the behavior with soft and loose body language. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. He engaged in play with the assessor becoming a bit over aroused during the tag interaction, but calmed quickly and remained soft in body. He proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy item keeping a firm grip on it as the assessor attempted to take it with the assess-a-hand. Due to all known behavior information the behavior department believes that Tyson can go to a home with an experienced dog owner. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, dog licks hands while lips are long. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He quickly becomes a bit aroused jumping very strongly on the assessor, but de-escalates after a couple minutes Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. When off leash with other dogs, Tyson initially ignores greeting. He enters the pen and becomes a bit playful and bouncy. 3/9 update: Tyson is briefly interested in play and becomes a bit bouncy, but may also have the intent to mount.
03/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Tyson has engaged in play with female dogs, at times with intent to mount. He has not been introduced off-leash to a male dog, but has been observed as displaying stiff body language when greeting one through only a barrier. According to Tyson’s previous owner, “when he spots a dog on the streets he barks, growls, snarls and lunges at them, especially male dogs”. Tyson hasn’t lived with other animals, according to his previous owner, so in-home behaviors with dogs are unknown. Based on the observations made on Tyson and owner surrender profile, the behavior department feels that a pre-adoption interaction should be required for Tyson before placement with another dog. We advise against placement with another male dog, until Tyson’s behaviors around them can be followed up on in a stable environment. When off leash with other dogs, Tyson initially ignores greeting. He enters the pen and becomes a bit playful and bouncy. 3/9 update: Tyson is briefly interested in play and becomes a bit bouncy, but may also have the intent to mount. 3/11 update: Tyson engages in bouncy running play with a female. He becomes stiff when greeting a male through the gate.
