06/07/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Handsome Tyson was waiting quietly in his kennel, and when he saw me unlatch his door, leash in hand, he sat to be leashed! OK Tyson, you’ve impressed me! Easy peasy to walk, taking care of his business is his first priority, and then we’re off to the park. He’s round and short (just perfect!) and his coat gleams with good care. As he posed for some pictures in the park a group of kids began playing ball and his tail wagged as he watched. We’re told he lived “in a household with children from different age groups that came to visit” and is very playful with them, so I’m imagining that Tyson would have so loved to join the game. Tyson also lived with cats and dogs and wanted to play. He’s calm when being bathed, doesn’t guard his things, loves to play fetch, is housetrained, is used to being walked 3x a day, and knows ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘come here’, and likes being in the same room as the family. Tyson was surrendered due to landlord issues but it’s clear that he was a cherished family companion used to the comforts of a home. When I filled Tyson’s water bowl at the sink he stood up, paws on the edge to watch! Smart boy knows his way around the kitchen! Mr. Awesome would love a new family to take care of and is hoping it will be yours. Come meet him today!
06/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Tyson came into our center as an owner surrender. It is reported he has lived in a household with children of various ages, playful with them. Owner reports Tyson has lived with other dogs, cats, and snakes, hyper around them and loves to play. Tyson is reportedly not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. Owner reports Tyson is housebroken to go outside on the grass, is well behaved when alone in the home. He is described as playful, affectionate, and friendly with a high activity level. During intake, Tyson had loose wiggly body and wagging tail, allowed all handling. Tyson shoulder rubbed upon positioning for tactile portions of SAFER assessment, unable to perform Look item. Tyson leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, open mouth, tail wag. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, became overly aroused quickly, grabbing leash, jumping up to mouth leash closer and closer to assessor’s hand, never fully settling for the remainder of the assessment. He mouthed assessor’s hand during first Squeeze attempt, no pressure. Tyson showed no interest in Toy, focused on jumping to grab the leash, at times vocalizing, reluctant to relinquish. Owner reports his favorite activity is to play catch, but Tyson was not given toys of his own to play with in the home. When off leash with other dogs, Tyson greets politely and briefly engages in running play. The Behavior Team feels Tyson would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children. He would benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners as well as focus and body awareness. Look: 3. Dog rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag 3 . Dog grabs leash, will not relinquish, jumps up mouthing closer and closer to assessor’s hand. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2:1. Dog does not pull back paw, sniffs hand. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Tyson greets politely and briefly engages in running play.

Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Tyson engages in briefly in play with female dogs, then roams the pen. He has been observed to be tense and hard barking when greeting unneutered males through a barrier, but has not yet been introduced off leash. His behavior around male dogs should be followed up on outside the shelter before immediate introduction. When off leash with other dogs, Tyson mostly displays persistant mounting behaviors. 6/6 update: Tyson greets politely and briefly engages in running play. 6/7: Tyson greets, sniffs, briefly engages in play. 6/8: Tyson engages briefly in play with female dogs. When greeting a male dog through a barrier, he becomes tense and begins to bark. 6/9: Tyson is tolerant of pushy solicitation, does not engage in play. 6/10 update: Tyson, again, is sexually motivated but responds well to correction. He is tolerant of an assertive female who repeatedly jumps on him and vocalizes. 6/11 update: Tyson is sexually motivated but once offered correction he will engage in play when solicited. 6/12: Tyson briefly greets, then roams.
