DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 9/3: When introduced to a dog on leash, Tyke is tense, whining. He maintains hard eye contact, with a high tail and raised hackles. At this time, the behavior department recommends allowing Tyke time to decompress outside of the care center before following up on behavior around dogs. Future follow up should be conducted at a slow pace to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Tyke had a tucked tail, was tense, and was growling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/4/17 During his initial medical exam, Tyke was tense and did not like handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Tyke’s previous owner described him as having a very high activity level. He is a young dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to Tyke’s history of growling at the five-year-old child in the home, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Tyke’s previous owner reported that he growls at new people, but will warm up to them over time. This behavior has also been seen at the care center, growling at first at new people but then warming but and becoming social. It is important to always go slow and give Tyke the option to walk away from any social interaction. Tyke should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Tyke’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Tyke would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
