A volunteer writes: Tye has the cutest, most adorable under bite it makes him look permanently sad, however looks can be deceiving. He is so “wiggly” and happy. Tye came to the shelter as a stray and can use some fattening up. Tye walks well on leash, doing his business as soon as we exit the building. Tye loved every dog we encountered on our walk today and enjoyed the treats I had to offer; he took them so sweetly and did this cute little shuffle (lifting one paw then the other if I there was a delay in treat dispensing). He is a total heart breaker!!! Come to Staten Island ACC and meet him.
SAFER
Tye came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was very nervous upon intake, shaking with tail down, but warmed up with slow approach, allowed all handling. Tye walked well on leash for his relief walk, no pulling. He was a bit nervous upon entering SAFER assessment room, head and body low, tail down. Although not fully comfortable, Tye was easy to position and accepted all tactile portions of the assessment. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail low. He accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body trembling, mouth closed and ears back. Tye followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, head low, tail neutral. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, slightly wagging tail. When off leash with other dogs, Tye was initially nervous on his first day, but has vastly improved, loose and wiggly, engaging in brief bouts of play. Tye would do best with an Experienced adopter that can take their time so he can relax in his new environment. He would do best with a slow introduction and initially a calm, structured routine. He appears to relax in the company of other social dogs.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body trembling, mouth closed, ears back.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, head low, tail neutral.
Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not pull his paw back, slight wagging tail.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Tye warmed up significantly from the first day and is now loose and wiggly when greeting male and female dogs. He engaged in brief bouts of running/ jumping play and offers multiple play bows. Tye appeared to be comfortable and tolerant, he was social and did not offer any corrections to pushy dogs.
GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Tye was very nervous when greeted by a social female. His head was low and tail tucked, he allows to be greeted but does not engage in play. He sat by the exit door and appeared uncomfortable.
2/9 update
Tye was loose and wiggly when greeting male and female dogs. He engaged in brief bouts of running/ jumping play and offers multiple play bows. Tye appeared to be comfortable and tolerant, he was social and did not offer any corrections to pushy dogs.
2/10 – 2/11 update : Tye continues to be social and playful in a large group of male and female dogs.
2/12 update : Tye engages in running / jumping play and offers multiple play bows to both male and female dogs.
2/13 update : Tye engaged in rough / mouthy play with a social female. He may attempt to mount at time but takes well to corrections from dogs and human handlers.
