02/18/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/18/17 14:05 Ty is friendly and outgoing towards strangers and enjoys sniffing people out. He lives with an 11 year old but has been with her since she was 5 and is relaxed and playful with her. He plays exuberantly with both children and adults. He has spent time around a small dog but she didn’t really lie him so he was respectful of her space. His owner never really allowed him to greet other dogs on the street because he had growled in the past when walking by them. He lived with a cat and would constantly chase him. He has bitten a human once but the owner says the victim was messing with the animal a lot. He has never bitten another animal. During loud noises such as storms, Ty is nervous and will bark if inside but will try to escape if outside. When his owner takes away his food bowl, Ty will follow where it goes. If it’s a treat he will growl (but non aggresively). If it’s a toy he thinks his owner is playing. He isn’t bothered by his owner pulling him off of furniture, holding him from something he wants, and being awoken from his slumber. He tolerates baths and brushing but has never had his nails trimmed so it’s unknown how he would react. He barks when someone unfamiliar approaches his home or humans but becomes friendly once he’s sniffed them out. Ty is friendly, affectionate, playful and excitable. He has a medium activity level and when he’s ready to play enjoys playing fetch with balls (but won’t always bring back), chase, and wrestling. He also loves squeaky toys and chew bones. His owner loves how much Ty loves soft things such as blankets and that he’s always hanging out in the same room as his humans. He’s kept mostly indoors and sleeps on his owner’s bed or his owner’s brother’s bed. He’s very house-trained and only has accidents if left for 15 or more hours. When outside, he enjoys going potty on grass and dirt. When he’s alone in his home, he will destroy smaller items such as socks and has never been crate-trained. He knows sit, come, and stay and enjoys brisk walks and runs on leash. He will pull hard when he sees something exciting. Ty eats Kirkland Rice and Salmon dry food, 3 cups, twice a day. His favorite treats are anything. On intake, counselor collared Ty and he stayed sitting nicely. He took a treat gently out of counselors hands. He allowed all handling.
02/24/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ty sat quietly to the side of his cage. His big round eyes looking out at me through the bars of his cage. I crouched down to talk to him for a bit and ask him if he wants to go for a walk. I open the cage and he lets me put the leash on no problem. He walks with me to the top of the stairs and looks up at me as if to say can we just hang out here. So we do. I pet and cuddle this sweet little man in the hallway. I told him he will be cuddling with someone on their couch really soon. Another volunteer writes: Ty is a one-of-a-kind find, unique in both temperament and looks and so cute that when a passerby complimented a woman walking ahead of us, I genuinely thought he was speaking to Ty! I’m no fan of cropped ears but his are picture perfect, and those big bug eyes get me every time. Who could refuse such a gorgeous, goofy mug? Ty is friendly, he walks well on leash, seems very house trained, already knows how to sit, and he waits politely for treats too. His former owners call him ‘affectionate, playful and excitable’ and we’re told he was respectful of a small dog pal but did prefer to chase the resident cat. Ty’s always keen to meet other pups while we stroll but he can get a bit overwhelmed in a playgroup setting, so slow introductions to new friends are a must, and only those with great social etiquette need apply. While he may have the gentlest heart, the softest touch and a slightly shy nature, when it comes to returning to his kennel it’s pretty much Ty’s way or the highway–this guy can really put on the brakes! Luckily for me he never complains about being carried or getting a lift of encouragement, so when it’s time to head indoors or upstairs we make do just fine. I’ve fallen hard for this sad-faced sweetheart and can only imagine the joy of being the sun at the center of his world and waking up to his adoring eyes each and every day. Ty is waiting patiently at our Manhattan Care Center, won’t you pay him a visit today?

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: The behavior department recommends allowing Ty to decompress and acclimate into a home environment as the only resident dog at this time. Ty has appeared uncomfortable with other dogs in the care center, and may not be comfortable in a dog park or daycare setting. Future introductions should be conducted with polite, tolerant dogs at a slow pace. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/17/17 During his initial medical exam, Ty was tense but allowed most handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Ty’s previous owner describes him as having a medium activity level. In the care center, he displays a medium to low activity level.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult only home _X_No children (under 13): Due to Ty’s bite history, the circumstances and severity of which are unknown we recommend an adult only home out of an abundance of caution. Potential challenges: __House soiling _X_Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Ty was observed to growl and snap when in possession of a treat. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Ty’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Ty has bitten when uncomfortable, the circumstances and severity of the bite are not reported. In the care center, he appears fearful, moving away from touch. It is important to always go slow and give Ty the option to walk away from any social interaction. Ty should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Ty’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Ty would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
