He became mouthy during tag item, and was tense throughout his handling assessment. IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 2/15/17 Twix is deteriorating behaviorally in the Care Center. Over the last couple of the days, Twix has displayed severe anxiety and frustration in his kennel. Today, when an ACO was attempting to place Twix into his kennel, he began to bulk. After she was able to get him in, he turned around and bit her finger, but did not break skin, when she was locking the kennel door. At this time, The Behavior Department does not feel that he is a suitable candidate for the adoptions room and recommend that placement be sought as soon as possible. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience especially with behaviors outlined below). _X_No children (under 13): Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended. _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Twix has shown an uncomfortability upon some forms of touch, becoming tense and at times stiff, for these reasons we recommend an experienced an adult-home only who can appropriately work with this behaviors. Handling should never be forced and we recommend associating only positive things with touch. _X_Anxiety
02/11/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Twix was surrendered as a stray, so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Twix initially solicits gentle play before becoming anxious and seeking to exit the pen. With further playgroup sessions, Twix has displayed soft and calm body language when socializing with male and female dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Twix be placed in a home with well-socialized residents dogs that are comfortable with his anxious behavior. 2/11: Twix displays loose and wiggly body language as he greets a novel female by play bowing and barking. Once in the pen, he solicits and engages in gentle play, but becomes anxious as the session continues and barks and the gate. 2/12: Twix is immediately anxious when off leash with a novel male and female. He does not greet and instead continuously vocalizes while pawing at the gate. 2/14: Twix is less anxious today and greets novel dogs displaying soft body language. He continues to display soft body language as he explores the pen. 2/15: Twix displayed anxious and conflicted body language when greeting playful dogs. He is whining as he is play bowing, while also lip curling. He attempts to solicit play, but begins to be corrected by another dog. He is tolerant of the correction and moves away. Due to the other dogs’ discomfort with his anxious behavior, he is removed from the group.
