05/31/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: You won’t find this girl blowing aimlessly down the street! Her gorgeous face (there must be some Boxer in her lineage) is focused, mostly serious until she gives kisses and hugs, and then there’s a fabulous smile! She pulls hard on the leash until we’ve been out for a while, is likely housetrained, and when I tether her for pictures, gets cutely tangled up in her leash. I can touch and handle her all over as I untangle her, she sniffs and rejects my treats and looks up at me with her green eyes full of mirth, perhaps wondering why I don’t have a better offering. The squirrels and birds in the park have her full attention, and when they’re out of view, Tumbleweed is in my lap for some kisses and cuddle time. Tail waggy, lively, fun and friendly, Miss Tumbleweed is ready to tumble into your life and be your bestie.
05/30/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/29/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/20/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Tumbleweed displayed a high amount of activity and movement on her assessment, at time jumping on the assessor. She was social throughout and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Hyper-motivated: These dogs come on too strong and have coarse social skills. They may have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs, or likely deprived of off- leash contact. They are overly excited when meeting new dogs, and not able to read subtle signals to back off. PLAYGROUP: Tumbleweed plays exuberantly with dogs in the care center, and most frequently participates in running chase play. Initially Tumbleweed displayed the potential to become over-aroused while engaging play, though with continued interaction has begun to show improvement in self-regulating levels of exictement and arousal during play. The behavior department recommends slow, supervised introductions between Tumbleweed and other playful, or ighly tolerant dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 5/29/17 Upon intake, Tumbleweed allowed handling and jumped on the counselor. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/29/17 During her initial medical exam, Tumbleweed was active and allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Tumbleweed so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Tumbleweed jumped up some during her assessment. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
05/30/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
5/30: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Tumbleweed engages in bouts of bouncy running play. She offers correction for more mouthy, pushy play. 5/31: Tumbleweed is forward and displays tense, assertive body posturing when greeting. She quickly breaks up this beahvior by offering playful bows and soliciting running play. Tumbleweed quickly becomes highly aroused while engaging in chase, and requires handler interruptions to de-escalate herself. Tumbleweed, once over aroused, begins to become tense, vocalize, and air snap at the other dog. 6/1: Tumbleweed engages in running chase play. She demonstrates more ability to self-regulate her level of arousal, and requires less interruption from handlers. 6/2-3: Tumbleweed remains exuberant when playing with other dogs. She adjusts her play when the other dog solicits softer play. 6/6: Tumbleweed greets politely. She will then solicit play by offering playbows and spin moves.
