01/19/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Meet Tucker, our bilingual canine! That’s right! Tucker knows the commands ‘sit’ and ‘come’ in both Spanish and English, and given his high motivation for food (comida!), I am sure he can be taught many more. We’re told that Tucker has lived with kids (ninos!) and another dog, and got along harmoniously with them, even sleeping with his puppy pal (awww). On our walks, Tucker is always very mild-mannered, quick to do his “business”, and then get in as much cuddle time as possible with me. It’s hard to resist his mushy jowls and strong advances–trust me–he’s going to give you lots of kisses (besos!) whether you like it or not! He seems friendly toward other dogs (perros!), even wiggling and wagging at another passing puppy. When I return him to his kennel, he’s quick to curl up and fall asleep…it seems he’s “tuckered out” from our time together. Whether you speak Spanish or English, one language we can all understand is love, and there’s no greater love than that of a dog–ask to meet Tucker today! Another volunteer writes: To say I’m smitten with Tucker would be the understatement of the year (pretend it’s December so this statement is as strong as I intend it to be)! He has eyes like a person, enough skin around his neck to make a few extra, and is the king of cuddling! He walks nicely on leash (and frequently looks back at me to check in), eagerly sits for treats, and seems housebroken. He whines for attention, sort of whimpers when he can’t get as much in my lap as he’d like to, and practically gives bear hugs. Seriously, he is sweet in every way (and so handsome!). So march on over to Brooklyn ACC on your two feet, meet Tucker, and get swept off them!
01/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered male, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Two adults, one child (age 4), and another large dog Behavior toward children: Playful, gentle Behavior toward dogs: Playful and relaxed around his housemate Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Unknown Energy level/descriptors: Other notes: Tucker is noted to destroy household items (sneakers, paper), and to bolt out doors that are left open. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/14/17 Look:1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Tucker was affectionate and friendly towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: According to Tucker’s previous owner, around the other resident dog he was playful and relaxed. The previous owner stated the two dogs would play and sleep together. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Tucker displays nervous body language -a lowered head and tucked tail- when greeting a novel female dog. He initially avoids greeting her, but relaxes and the session continues and becomes more social. He is slightly sexually motivated, persistently licking the female’s genital area, but does not attempt to mount. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/12/17: During his initial medical examation, Tucker tolerated all handling ENERGY LEVEL: Tucker’s reported bolting behavior needs to be managed and ideally modified to prevent any harm befalling him during an escape. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training for Tucker.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Destructive behavior: Tucker is reported to show destructive behavior of some loose objects in the home (sneakers, paper). We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior or of what his motivation may have been (boredom, smell, desire to chew) but we suggest to future adopters that Tucker will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. The environment should be managed to keep these human objects out of his reach.
