03/18/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/18/17 14:31 Trumpet is a Lhasa Apso found wandering outside by himself. He followed finder all the way to her home. He willing followed finder into the car for transport to ACC. When finder attempted to pick Trumpet up to lift out of car he snapped at her and bit her finger but did not break skin. During his intake Trumpet had a loose body and would put his paws on counselor and solicit attention. He occasionally would wine and started to jerk back on the leash when walking him. He allowed handling for collaring, scanning and photographing but when attempting to touch his under belly or his tail/butt he turns to snap at counselor. He will jump onto counselors lap but still procede with slow movements and caution where on his body you are touching.

03/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/18/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/20/17 Toy: 4. Dog Growls Summary: Trumpet appeared social with the assessor, jumping up on the assessor and soliciting attention. When she went to collar him, he growled and snapped, so handling portions of the assessment were omitted. He then growled when in possession of a toy. PLAYGROUP: 3/21: When introduced off leash to other dogs Trumpet mostly seeks handler attention and growls when approached by dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/18/17 During his initial exam, Trumpet was snapping and growling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Trumpet so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Trumpet displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Trumpet is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Trumpet has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding (Potential resource guarding was noted on his assessment as he was observed to growl when in possession of a toy. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Trumpet’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.) _X_Handling/touch sensitivity (It is important to always go slow and give Trumpet the option to walk away from any social interaction. Trumpet should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling.) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Trumpet has attempted to bite during his stay in our care centers when uncomfortable; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Sasha to new and unfamiliar situations.)
